Seniors Lead Army Past Duke, 9-5

DURHAM, N.C. – The Army West Point baseball team evened its series with Duke here Saturday afternoon after notching a 9-5 victory.
The Class of 2017 had a solid outing for the Black Knights as each senior that saw action recorded at least two hits on the day.
Leading the way was Kris Lindner, who finished 3-for-4 with an RBI. Fellow classmate Alex Dickerson racked up the RBIs after hitting his first career grand slam in the seventh inning. That blast handed Army the 7-5 lead with just two-and-half innings to play.
David Monge was impressive as well, finishing 2-for-4 on the afternoon with a run and an RBI.
Matt Ball came in for relief and earned the win after pitching 4.0 innings allowing just two hits. Tyler Giovinco got the starting nod going the first 5.0 innings, giving up eight hits and five runs, four of which were earned. Both pitchers fanned two batters each.
Army jumped out to the early 1-0 edge after Matt Hudgins drilled the Cadets' first long ball of the season in the second inning. The Blue Devils then responded with the next five runs to create a 5-1 gap between the teams. The Black Knights cut into the deficit in the sixth following doubles by Jon Rosoff, John McCarthy and Lindner to make it a 5-3 ballgame. Dickerson then put Army back in front with his four-run shot to left field before the Cadets added two insurance runs in the eighth to ultimately secure the win.

- Dickerson and Hudgins posted home runs, marking Army's first two long balls of the year. Dickerson's hit was his second career homer, while Hudgins shot was the first of his career.
- Monge was credited with his first stolen base of the year.
- Dickerson had five RBIs all of last year but already has 12 just five games into this season.

- Army finished with nine runs, a season-high 12 hits and two errors. Duke closed out the game with five runs, 10 hits and no errors.
- The Black Knights stranded four runners, while the Blue Devils left six.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hudgins long ball to right center handed Army the 1-0 lead after two innings.
- The Blue Devils scored three runs in the third and two in the fourth to break the game open at 5-1.
- Army would not waver though as the Cadets answered with two runs in the sixth. Rosoff and McCarthy started the inning hitting back-to-back doubles for the Black Knights' first run of the inning. Duke then recorded two outs but Lindner followed that up by doubling to right center to bring home another run.
- The Black Knights added four huge runs in the seventh after Dickerson went yard. Anfernee Crompton started the inning earning a walk. The Blue Devils tallied the first out but Monge singled through the right side on the ensuing play to place runners on the corners. Rosoff then loaded the bases after earning a walk forcing Duke to make a pitching change. During the next at bat, Dickerson blasted one over the left-field fence, handing Army the 7-5 edge.
- The Cadets added two more runs in the eighth after sparking a two-out rally. Crompton singled to left field before White doubled to bring him home. Monge then followed that up singling up the middle, which allowed White to cross home plate.
UP NEXT
- Army and Duke close out of their three-game series with a rubber match on Sunday at 1 p.m. That contest is slated for the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and will be streamed live on the ACC Network/ESPN 3.
