HAMMOND, La. – The Army West Point softball team fell to a narrow 5-3 defeat against UT Martin during the Lion Classic on Saturday afternoon at North Oak Park.

Army slips to 0-2 on the young season, while UT Martin improves to 3-0.

Freshman Emily Ballesteros batted 2-for-4 and drove in a run for Army, while junior Emily Gray and freshman Madison Cole also picked up RBIs. Additionally, Cole, junior Sam Hartman, sophomore Ashley Yoo and freshman Lacey Swafford registered hits.

Freshman Macey Newbary pitched one and two-thirds innings in her first career start, while senior Kristen West struck out one batter in four and one-third innings of relief during her season debut.

Lauren Myers led UT Martin with two hits, while Rachel Williams drove home four RBIs. Brooke Kennedy pitched all seven innings and struck out five to pick up the win.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES

Army drops to 0-4 all-time versus UT Martin.
Ballesteros led the Cadets with two hits on a 2-for-4 day from the batter's box.
Cole drove in Army's first run of the season, with a home run to left center in the second inning.
Hartman and senior Alee Rashenskas also crossed the plate for the Black Knights.
Newbary earned her first career start.
West made her season debut in relief of Newbary.

KEY MOMENT

Williams drove home four runs with one swing of the bat on a grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the second inning to give UT Martin a 5-1 lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Cole gave Army its first lead of the 2017 campaign with a homer in the top of the second inning.
Myers hit a single to drive home Alli Fulcher in bottom of the second before Williams hit a grand slam with two outs later in the inning to give the Skyhawks a 5-1 advantage after two innings.
Army got two more runs in the top of the fifth, as Ballesteros doubled down the left field line to score Hartman with one out in the inning.
Rashenskas crossed home plate and Ballesteros moved to third base after a Gray grounded out to shortstop for the second out of the inning.
