Black Knights Fall to Colgate in Four Sets

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team fell to Colgate Sunday afternoon, 3-1, in Hamilton, N.Y. The Black Knights were down 2-0 in the match and were able to wrestle one away from the Raiders before Colgate clinched the match, 3-1.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND MATCH NOTES
- Carolyn Bockrath led the Black Knights with 19.5 points in the match. She produced 17 kills and added three block assists.
- Vanessa Wesley (13), Amber Clay (12) and Allie Strong (10) also had double-digit kill matches for the Black Knights.
- Haven Bethune boasted 54 assists, while Ana Oglivie tallied 11 digs.
- The Black Knights led Colgate in points (69-66), kills (63-55), blocks (5-4) and assists (62-52), but the Raiders' dominance in service aces (7-1) and digs (51-45) were the difference makers in today's contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE (25-22 COLGATE)
- Both teams saw back-and-forth action in the set. Colgate was leading Army 17-15, but a 5-2 run by the Black Knights enabled them to overtake the Raiders 20-19.
- The Raiders charged ahead though and won the set 25-22.
- Clay and Strong led the Cadets with five kills a piece with Clay hitting at .714.
- As a team, the Raiders hit .556 in the first set, while holding Army to .351.
SET TWO (25-11 COLGATE)
- Colgate continued on its hot streak in the second set and led the Black Knights 13-9 and went on a 12-2 streak to clinch the second set.
- The Raiders held the Black Knights to a .080 hitting percentage in the set as the Cadets caused seven errors to their three.
- Bockrath stepped up in the set with five kills.
SET THREE (29-27 ARMY)
- The Black Knights did not want to see the match end in the third set and toughed it out for a 29-27 extended point win.
- The set saw 13 tie scores and six lead changes before the Black Knights were able to go ahead.
- Bockrath continued to put her foot on the gas pedal as she notched six kills on 13 attempts for a .385 hitting percentage.
- The Black Knights recorded two blocks in the set to Colgate's zero.
SET FOUR (25-19 COLGATE)
- The final set of the match was similar to the first with nine tie scores. The two teams battled back-and-forth before Colgate took it 25-19 to also clinch the match.
- Army was led by Wesley who had five kills, while Clay added four.
- The Black Knights were on track to force a fifth set with 15 kills to Colgate's 13, but the Raiders' 4-2 run to close things out secured the set for them.
UP NEXT
- Army will be back at Gillis Field House on Friday night for the final home game of the season. The Black Knights host Lehigh at 7 p.m. for senior night before heading to Navy for a Sunday game at 1 p.m.
