Valeri Heads to NCAA Championships
November 17, 2017 | Men's Cross Country
West Point, N.Y. – Senior John Valeri of the Army West Point men's cross country team will race at the NCAA Men's Cross Country Championship meet on Saturday in Louisville, Ky.
Coach's Corner:Â
"This is a significant accomplishment, not only for John, but for our program because we haven't had a representative on the men or the women's side at the NCAA cross country meet in a decade," said head coach Mike Smith. "John came in as a plebe and experienced very little success early on, but has really worked hard. For him to now realize his potential is a testament to his work ethic, discipline, and commitment to be as good as he can be. If you work hard, you can see what you're capable of, and he is a good example of that. He set a good standard all year for our young guys and now we have a whole team of guys aspiring to get to the NCAA level.
Â
"So, it's a great step forward for John but also for our team. We came so close to making it as a team, that I think it just is going to fuel the fire that's already there. This is significant on a number of levels. I'm happy for our program that we have begun to chip away at the greatness that is possible here."
