Army Drops Road Contest to St. Francis Brooklyn
November 16, 2017 | Women's Basketball
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's basketball team fell behind in the second quarter and was unable to climb back into the game, ultimately falling, 73-52, to St. Francis Brooklyn on the road on Wednesday night.
The Black Knights (1-2) ran into a Terrier (1-1) team that could not miss from anywhere on the court, making 30 shots on 53-percent shooting from the field. A lot of the Terriers' success came from inside as they hurried down the court on every missed Army shot and looked to immediately drive toward the basket and score in transition.
The efficient shooting led to a bevy of Terrier runs that put the Black Knights in a hole and Army could not get into a rhythm on the offensive end to get out of it.
Madison Hovren and Aliyah Murray were both able to reach double-figure scoring though as they poured in a combined 26 points. Hovren finished the night with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Murray pitched in with 10 points and six boards.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Despite holding a lead entering the first media timeout, St. Francis Brooklyn was experiencing issues holding onto the ball and committing fouls. The Terriers picked up four turnovers and had five team fouls in the first six minutes. The Black Knights were unable to take much advantage of those mishaps though and shot just 3-of-10 from the field in the early going.
- At the end of the first quarter, the two sides were tied at 12 apiece, with Hovren leading all scorers with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting.
- The Black Knights opened the second frame with two consecutive plays that featured a backdoor cut and score, allowing Army to take a four-point advantage. However, the slim lead was quickly erased after a 10-0 Terriers' run.
- Hovren ended the scoreless drought with a deep two to put her in double figures, but St. Francis Brooklyn answered right back with a three from Maria Palarino, her fifth made shot of the half. The lead was up to seven, 27-20, before a 15-4 Terrier run was ended.
- The Terriers took their largest lead of the opening half, 34-24, with less than a minute remaining when Jade Johnson connected on a shot from long range. Over the lengthy run, the team made five of their seven shots.
- St. Francis Brooklyn took a 34-25 lead into the second half of action and continued to find the bottom of the basket, going on an 8-2 run. Later in the quarter, the Terriers grabbed a 21-point advantage after an 11-2 spurt.
- Entering the final quarter of action, the Terriers led by 17, 57-40. The two sides traded baskets for much of the fourth, never allowing Army to put a significant dent into the deficit, ultimately allowing St. Francis Brooklyn to secure the win.
