Army Renews Rivalry with Air Force

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point hockey team hits the road again this weekend as the Black Knights head to Colorado Springs for a series at service academy rival Air Force.

Army is also facing the Falcons in men's and women's rugby Friday, as well as football on Saturday among various academy competitions throughout the weekend.

ARMY (3-3-0, 3-3-0 Atlantic Hockey)
- Army faced a tough RIT team last weekend and fell to 3-3-0 on the year and in Atlantic Hockey contests.
- The Black Knights' top line of Tyler Pham, Michael Wilson and Dominic Franco continued to excel with six points on the weekend.
- Pham recorded two goals, while Wilson and Franco each tallied a score and an assist.
- Army jumped ahead 2-0 on Friday, but the Tigers bounced back for a four-goal second period. On Saturday, RIT netted the first score with Pham tying the game in the second frame.
- The Tigers scored the game-winner with under three minutes to go, and an empty net insurance goal with 46 seconds on the clock.
AIR FORCE (5-2-1, 1-1-0 Atlantic Hockey)
- This will be the Falcons' first AHA home game this season. Air Force has posted a 5-2-1 overall record and a 1-1-0 AHA mark.
- The Falcons split at Canisius last weekend, but have also earned wins over Alaska Fairbanks (3-2), Arizona State (4-3, 3-2) and Bemidji State (5-1).
- Air Force is currently ranked 19th in the country in the USCHO.com poll and will be the highest ranked opponent Army has faced since Jan. 4, 2013 when the Cadets defeated No. 19 Robert Morris, 5-0.
- Air Force is led by Matt Koch and Jordan Himely who both boast six points on the year, while Evan Giesler is first in assists with five.
- Billy Christopoulos has been utilized in net for the Falcons and has a 2.12 goals against average and .925 save percentage.
THE FRONT LINE
- The Black Knights top line this season of Pham, Wilson and Franco have combined for 48 percent of Army's offensive production.
- Franco leads the team in points (9) and assists (6) along with multi-point performances (3).
- Wilson is first in goals (4), while Pham boasts an even three goals and three assists.
ARMY AIR FORCE SERIES HISTORY
- This will be the 71st and 72nd meetings between Army and Air Force on the ice.
- The series began in 1969 when the two teams faced off in St. Petersburg, Fla. The teams then alternated locations after that.
- Once the Black Knights and Falcons joined the Atlantic Hockey Association, the meetings became more frequent.
- During the 2016-17 season, Army played Air Force a record-breaking five times.
OCTOBER STANDOUTS
- The Black Knights' offensive production has been amongst the top in the league during the month of October.
- Franco is tied for 22nd nationally in points per game (1.50) and is first in the AHA in assists per game (1.00).
- The sophomore has posted three multi-point games with two being three-point performances.
- John Zimmerman has been a constant in Army's defense and is tied for first in league-only contests for rookies.
- He produces 0.67 points per game to rank fourth overall in the league.
