Army Uses Big First Half to Down Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Pa. – A 42-point first half by the Army West Point sprint football team led to a 62-14 victory over Mansfield on Saturday afternoon from Karl Van Norman Field.

The Black Knights improved to 6-0 on the year, while the Mounties dropped to 1-5.

Sophomore Jake Gigliotti was once again impressive in the ground game, posting a game-high 63 yards on 14 carries to go along with two touchdowns. Junior quarterback Keegan West guided the offense through the air, going 15-for-20 for 164 yards and three touchdowns. On the receiving end of those passes was Mike Shannon, who led the team in receptions, while Tom Williamson hauled in three passes for 46 yards and two scores.

Defensively, the Black Knights forced three turnovers, earning interceptions from Desmond Young, Tate Blessinger and Sharheem Taylor. Devon Moore and Connor Long led the team with five tackles apiece, with Long adding two sacks for a loss of 11 yards. Army managed to get into the backfield on multiple occasions, posting six tackles for loss.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES

Army improved to 9-0 in the all-time series with Mansfield dating back to 2009.
The Black Knights scored at least 50 points for the fourth time this season. It was also the second time they eclipsed 60 points in 2017.
Gigliotti scored multiple touchdowns for the third time this season.
West completed at least 15 passes for the third time this season, while eclipsing the 150-passing yard mark for the fourth-straight game.
West threw three touchdowns for the third game in a row.
He now has 30 career passing touchdowns.
His 14 touchdowns through the air in 2017 ties a personal-best from last season.
Matthew Sauter scored his first-career touchdown.
Eight different Cadets recorded a reception in the game.
Young scored Army's second defensive touchdown of the season and the first interception return for a score.
Long now has 7.5 sacks on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Mansfield received the opening kickoff, but was forced to punt after going three-and-out. The Black Knights made it tough for the Mouties to get their offense going, forcing a three-and-out on the first three drives of the game.
Army wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Gigliotti scampered into the end zone from 12-yards out just 2:23 into the contest.
Less than three minutes later, West connected with Carter from 14-yards out to increase Army's lead to 14-0. He added a 19-yard strike to Williamson with 7:03 in the first quarter.
The Mounties managed to score with roughly two and a half minutes left in the opening stanza as Jeff Bagwell caught a 13-yard pass from Nick Cherasaro to cut into the Army lead.
In the second quarter, the Black Knights matched their offensive output from the first quarter by scoring another 21 points. The defense generated the first score as Young picked off Cherasaro and returned the ball 50 yards for the touchdown.
Williamson caught his second touchdown of the day from West on a 21-yard pass before Gigliotti pounded the ball in for his second score.
Sophomore Peter Davis booted a 25-yard field goal at 10:39 in the third quarter to open the scoring in the second half.
Brady Miller got in the action, adding a 27-yard touchdown strike to John Descisciolo to send Army over the 50-point mark.
Davis booted a 22-yard field goal in the middle of the third quarter before Mansfield got on the board late in the period to make the score 55-14.
Sauter capped the scoring with 13:44 remaining on a 6-yard touchdown run.
