Army Travels to Air Force for Two

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point hockey team returns to Atlantic Hockey action this weekend as the Black Knights travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to take on Air Force for the second time this season.

THIS WEEK: AIR FORCE AGAIN
- Army hosted the Falcons at Tate Rink earlier this season on Nov. 4-5 with the Cadets taking game one, 4-2, and Air Force claiming game two, 3-1.
- The Black Knights' win in Friday night's game snapped a 10-game unbeaten streak by Air Force.
- This weekend will be a telling one for league standings as Army and the Falcons are separated by one point with Air Force on the advantage.
- Friday's game will begin at 9:05 p.m. ET, while Saturday's puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. ET.
LAST WEEK: EDGING RMC
- The Black Knights continued on to an 11-game unbeaten streak over RMC with a 5-3 victory in front of a sellout crowd last Saturday.
- Cole Bruns picked up the victory behind 28 saves. Dominic Franco led the team with two goals, while Michael Wilson and Dalton MacAfee each added two assists.
- Nash Worden, Brendan McGuire and Ian Mansfield also added to Army's goal tally as Nick DeCenzo, Garret Peterson, Tipper Higgins and Alex Wilkinson all recorded solo assists.
- Army took a 1-0 lead after the first period before the Black Knights and Paladins alternated goals in the second stanza to bring the score to 4-2 in favor of Army.
- The Paladins notched a power play goal to trail by one with 17 minutes left in the game, but Franco sealed the 5-3 victory with an empty netter with 47 seconds on the clock.
ROOKIES POWER OFFENSE
- The plebe class has been the difference maker for the Black Knights' offense this season.
- The freshmen lead the team across all offensive statistical categories. Together, the freshmen account for 29 goals and 36 assists.
- Zach Evancho and Brendan Soucie lead the team with 10 goals apiece.
- Alex Wilkinson and Franco are second on the team in assists with 10 each as Wilkinson boasts the most of any defender on the team. In points, Evancho and Franco are the leaders with 17 apiece.
RACE TO THE TOP
- The Black Knights are one of multiple teams vying for the top spots in Atlantic Hockey standings.
- The Falcons are tops in the league with 24 points and an 11-5-2 mark. Army is second with 23 points and is followed by Canisius (22) and Robert Morris (22). RIT is the only other team with over 20 points so far this season.
- This weekend's games will help clarify some rankings since Army and Air Force play each other along with Robert Morris at Holy Cross and Canisius at AIC.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
- Army has jumped back into the USCHO.com National poll after receiving two votes.
- The Black Knights have won their last three games, including wins over Mercyhurst (4-1), AIC (2-0) and a matchup against the Royal Military College of Canada.
- Air Force also received votes this week (11) along with Robert Morris (1) from the league.
- The Falcons and Colonials faced each other last weekend and split with Air Force taking the first game 6-2 and Robert Morris posting the 2-1 win on Saturday.
SCOUTING AIR FORCE
- Air Force enters the weekend with an overall record of 14-8-4 and an 11-5-2 mark in AHA contests.
- The Falcons have recently swept league opponents Niagara, Sacred Heart and Mercyhurst, but were tripped up when they faced Canisius and Robert Morris.
- Kyle Haak leads the team with 21 points off seven goals and a team-high 14 assists
- Jordan Himley and Evan Geisler follow with 18 points each. Shane Starrett and Billy Christopoulos have split time in net recently.
- Starrett ranks fourth in the league for goals against (2.39) and picked up the win in net against Robert Morris after making 34 saves.
- This weekend will be the 68th/69th meetings between the service academy rivals and 31st/32nd at the Air Force Academy.
