Volleyball Drops First League Match of the Season

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to league rival American on Friday night. The Black Knights fell to 10-7 on the year and 2-1 in the Patriot League, while the Eagles jumped to 13-6, 3-0.

- Â Sydney Morriss once again led the Black Knights in kills with 10. Vanessa Wesley and Amber Clay each chipped in with seven, while Olivia Fairfield and Allie Strong each recorded six.
- Haven Bethune ran the offense with 24 assists and also notched six digs. Megan Bryn led defensively with 13 digs and was followed by Strong to posted 10 and Clay who had nine.
- American led in assists (38-33), digs (54-48), blocks (11-4) and overall points (54-43).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Black Knights trailed early on, but tied things up at 8-8 with Strong on the serve. American went ahead 15-11 for the first media timeout.
- The Eagles continued to push ahead to 23-17 after an 8-5 run over the Cadets and earned two consecutive points to clinch the set.
- Set two featured a lot of back and forth action between the two teams. Fairfield won the battle at the net and slammed the ball down two tie things up at 9-9.
- The Black Knights went ahead 11-9 with an ace by Clay, but a 4-0 run by the Eagles helped them claim a 13-11 lead.
- Strong tallied back-to-back kills to re-tie the set at 13-all. American fought back to win the set 25-, but the Black Knights stayed in the fight until the end with kills from Fairfield and Clay.
- The third was another close one for the two sides with two lead changes and six of 18 tie scores in the match.
- Army went ahead in the beginning of the final set 8-4 when Wesley tallied two kills including one off a free ball at the net.
- American came back to take the lead, but the Cadets came back to trail by one (13-12) after two points by Morriss. The Black Knights stayed in it with back-to-back blocks at the 17 point mark. Wesley and Fairfield were credited with block assists along with Bethune with two. The Eagles closed-out the set 25-20.
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights will be back in action at Gillis Field House Saturday afternoon with a Patriot League match against Loyola.
