Volleyball Battles, Falls to #3 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – The Army West Point volleyball team fell, 3-0, to No. 3 Texas Friday night at Gregory Gym in the second match of the American Campus Classic.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Amber Clay was a difference maker in tonight's match with a double-double, her third of the season. She totaled 10.5 points for the Black Knights off 10 kills and a block assist while adding a team-leading 11 digs. Megan Bryn also helped out defensively with 10 digs.
- Allie Strong (7.5 pts.), Sydney Morriss (4.5 pts.) and Olivia Fairfield (4.5 pts.) also pitched in offensively. Strong totaled six kills and six digs, while Morriss had four and Fairfield totaled three, respectively. Vanessa Wesley had four kills in the match for Army.
- Nikki Lum, Avery Alexander and Haven Bethune split time in the setter's position. Lum led with 12 assists followed by Alexander (8) and Bethune (7).
- Texas notched a 45-30 advantage in kills during the match and boasted a 44-30 assist advantage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Longhorns jumped out to a 9-1 lead before a kill by Wesley snapped their 7-0 run. Clay connected with Bethune to cut Texas's advantage to 13-5. The play was originally given to the Longhorns, but a challenge and overturn gave it to the Black Knights.
- Fairfield and Morriss connected for a block before Clay tipped it over the net for Army. Army slowly chipped away at Texas' lead and went on a 3-0 run to force a Longhorn timeout. Texas recorded back-to-back attacking errors before Strong notched a kill to bring the score to 15-11 in favor of the Longhorns.
- Texas then went on a 10-3 run to clinch the first set 25-15.
- Army jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second set fueled by a kill by Fairfield and a block by Strong. Clay then posted a kill for the Black Knights to take a 3-1 lead. The Longhorns jumped back, but a finish by Strong maintained Army's lead 4-3. Texas claimed a 9-6 lead, but a kill down the line by Victoria Reyer then Clay kept the Black Knights it the set.
- Wesley recorded an impressive kill to cut the Longhorns' lead to five. She spiked the ball down the middle of the court to bring the score to 20-15. The Black Knights held their own throughout the set with Clay adding a kill and Texas committing an attacking and service error to bring the score to 22-18 in favor of the Longhorns.
- The Cadets continued to fight as Fairfield tallied a kill and a continued play on the Texas side of the court kept got the team out of rotation to give Army the point (23-20).
- The Black Knights brought the score within two (23-21) and Strong recorded a kill, but the Longhorns reached 25 points to win the set by three.
- In the third set, Texas jumped out to a 10-6 lead after a 5-1 run. Â The Longhorns kept their momentum during the set to take a 17-12 lead forcing an Army timeout. Texas recorded three more points, while the Cadets recorded four of their own to bring the score to 20-16. The Longhorns claimed five of the next seven points however to win the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
