Day One Results
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Army West Point women's track and field team featured some quality performances on the first day of the Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Black Knights are in fifth at the conclusion of Friday with 20, just two points behind Holy Cross in fourth. Bucknell is in first place with 85.5 points.
"Coming into a conference championship meet there is always a hope that all of our athletes will set personal records and outperform what they have done that season," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "The reality of our sport is that rarely happens. There are so many moving parts that you almost always have the good outcomes and the bad. So at this meet, we have had more of the good things happen and we are well positioned for tomorrow on both the men's and women's side."
Senior Megan Gemar nearly won the Pole Vault event. Only Navy's Charlene Kearns and Gemar cleared the mark of 3.80 meters, but Kearns made it over the bar on the first attempt while Gemar took two attempts to clear.
Junior Rebecca Cousens added another strong performance in the field. Her 50.41-best in the Hammer Throw was the second-best mark.
Senior Haley Winters had the top mark in the 100 meter dash semifinal and a new personal-best at 12.01. Freshman Whidney Desormo also qualified for the finals with a 12.34. Winters (12.14) and Desormo (12.23) had the second and third-fastest times in the preliminaries, respectively. The final is scheduled for 2:50 p.m. tomorrow
Winters also ran in the 200 meter dash and posted the third-fastest time (24.68) in the group. She will look to improve upon that time in the finals on Saturday.
"We have been working hard with Haley on some technical aspects to her running and she did a good job of executing today," said Smith. "We needed her to set the tone for our team and she just that with the way she qualified in the 100 and 200. Megan Gemer closed out on a great career here today. She has consistently been a high performer for us and today was more of the same."
Junior Cori Lemere posted a personal-best in the Long Jump with 5.59 meter jump. That jump was good for fifth among the 23 competitors.
Saturday begins for the women with the Shot Put at 11:15 a.m.
