Quick Start Lifts Bucknell in Series Opener
April 09, 2016 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. –A couple of errors allowed Bucknell to take an early lead in the series opener against the Army West Point baseball team, which they would not relinquish in the 6-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Doubleday Field.
Sophomore Matt Ball was dialed in early on, striking out the side in order to start the game. The Charlotte, N.C., native ran into some trouble in the following innings, however, as the Bison (13-18, 4-1 PL) took an early lead.
Two runs in the second inning pushed them ahead with a double by Sam Clark and a groundout to short by Luke Johnson in consecutive at-bats. Spencer Stokes added an RBI single to left field the following inning to increase the lead to three runs.
Army (10-19, 1-4 PL)produced back-to-back innings with leadoff hits, but both times the Black Knights came away empty. First baseman Ryan Levenhagen led off the third inning by legging out an infield single. Left fielder John McCarthy singled through left side to start the home half of the fourth.
Bucknell's starter, Andrew Andreychik, was given all the help he needed as the righty tossed a complete-game six-hitter. The righty struck out six while allowing a walk.
Clark notched his second RBI of the game with two outs in the fifth. McCarthy made a heads-up play by going to third to record the final out of the inning.
Kris Lindner returns to the Black Knights lineup after a two game hiatus back in his normal leadoff spot. After leading off the first inning with a walk after getting down 0-2, the junior shortstop belted the second home run of his career to get things started in the bottom of the sixth. His blast to right field would be the only offense of the inning, however, as Andreychik settled down to retire the next three Cadets in order.
Stokes added a two-run double in the seventh to stretch the lead to 6-1, but Army would respond in its last at bats of game one.
The Black Knights would get their first three runners of the inning to reach base, starting with Keegan Vega who reached on an error. Center fielder Jacob Page doubled down the left field line, followed by an RBI infield single by Trey Martin. That would cap the threat, however, as a fielder's choice and two strikeouts ended the game.
