April 03, 2016 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – John Cain pitched 6.0 strong innings and the Lafayette offense scored in the final five innings in an 11-2 victory over the Army West Point baseball team in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field.
Army dipped to 9-17 overall and 0-3 in conference play, as Lafayette moved to 9-14 on the year and 3-0 in the Patriot League. Lafayette won the first two games of the series on Saturday.
Jon Rosoff led Army offensively with two hits, including a double, and Keegan Vega, John McCarthy, Stu Schley and Brock Davidson each recorded one base knock.
Jackson Kramer had three hits, drove in three runs and scored twice to pace the Lafayette offense. Campbell Lipe and Tyler Hudson added two hits apiece and Dan Leckie drove in two runs.
Army starting pitcher Tyler Giovinco ran into trouble in the top of the third when he hit a batter, issued a walk and an error loaded the bases with one out. Steven Cohen worked a walk to bring in the game's first run, before Dan Leckie followed by dropping a two-run double inside the right-field line to put the Leopards in front 3-0. Two batters later, John Selsor's sacrifice fly to deep left increased the Lafayette lead to 4-0.
Cain continued to pitch well and needed only six pitches to send Army down in order to finish the third.
The Leopards tacked on three more runs in the fourth when Kramer took advantage of two men in scoring position and found an opening behind first base with an opposite field single. An error added another run and the lead was 7-0 at that point.
Giovinco (1-1) took the loss after surrendering seven runs, two of which were earned, on five hits. The rookie southpaw fanned five and walked three Lafayette hitters.
A double into the left field corner by Rosoff broke up Cain's no-hit bid in the bottom of the fourth, but Army was unable to capitalize. Against Army reliever Cam Opp, Lafayette's Andrew Landofi delivered a sacrifice fly in the fifth, before an unearned run in the sixth made it 9-0 in favor of the visitors.
The Black Knights broke through in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double by Vega that chased home McCarthy and then Rosoff scored on a groundout by Stu Schley. Lafayette countered with two more runs in its half of the seventh inning to run the final total to 11-2.
Connor McMahon threw a scoreless seventh in relief of Cain to end the game. Cain's final line included two earned runs on five hits, with five strikeouts and two walks.
