"This is a famous meet, great history behind the meet, but it falls one week before our conference championship," said Army Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "We're unable to really load up and go for broke at this meet. We run some selective people that we know can handle the intensity and the atmosphere and still come out of the weekend fresh enough to be ready for next weekend."LIVE VIDEO • FloTrack

The 4x100 meter relay team will be one of those groups to run at the event. The impressive quartet of junior Jose Santana, sophomore Tyler Davis, and freshmen Ben Sims and Kevin Dyer, took third place last weekend at the Larry Ellis Invitational. Their time of 40.67 seconds was the second-best in academy history, only behind their own time in the Army-Navy outdoor event earlier this spring, a 40.44 that is currently the 43rd-fastest time in the NCAA East Region.
"We feel like they can improve upon the school record that we have if we can be clean with our handoffs," stated Smith. "We want them to run as many times as they can so that they can get (the handoffs) smooth. We want that team to be as good as it can be at the end of the year, so we need to continue to practice it."
Sims also won the 100 meter dash at last weekend's event with a time of 10.47 seconds, a time that ranks 40th in the region this season. Junior Trevor Touchton also stood atop the podium, as his victory came in the 800 meter run with a 1:51.24 time. Sophomore Lee Bares added a fourth-place in the pole vault with an IC4A-qualifying mark of 5.10 meters.
The first Cadets on the men's side will compete on Friday starting with the high jump at 10 a.m.
