Six Black Knights Land on All-Patriot League Teams
April 25, 2016 | Men's Lacrosse
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Army West Point men's lacrosse team had six players selected to the Patriot League All-League Teams on Monday afternoon.
The Black Knights had four members on the first team and two on the second squad. Cole Johnson, Jimbo Moore, Austin Schultz and Dan Grabher, were all voted onto the first team, while rookies Nate Jones and AJ Barretto were put on the second team. Army's six selections were tied with Navy and Loyola for the most on each team.
Johnson leads the league in overall points per game at 4.77 and is tied with Loyola's Pat Spencer for league points per game with 5.25. He has 62 points heading into Tuesday's quarterfinal against Lehigh, which is 11th on the all-time Army list for points in a season. He has tallied four or more points in eight of the 13 games this season, including a stretch of five games in which he scored 35 points. He had a career high eight points against Holy Cross and was added to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List during the season. Johnson was a second team honoree in 2015.
Moore is rewarded for his play of the field for the first time in his career after being voted onto the first team. He is currently tied for his career-high in points in a season with 19 and recorded his 50th career point with his second goal of the night at Loyola on April 22. He has a career high 12 goals this season and has started all 13 games at midfield.
Schultz is a two-time All-Patriot League selection and has reached career bests in all defensive categories. He spends a majority of his time on the field defending the opposing team's best player, Schultz turned in 15 caused turnovers and 21 ground balls during the regular season campaign. It was the first time in his career, he has reached double-digits in caused turnovers.
Grabher makes his first appearance on a postseason all-league team with first team honors. He was named the league's Faceoff Specialist of the Week twice during the season and currently ranks in the top 10 nationally in winning percentage at .626 in 13 games played. He has won 10 or more faceoffs in four games this season, including an 11-for-12 outing against Holy Cross.
Jones has been an excellent addition to the Army offense this season and his team-high 33 goals got him on the second team. He has hat tricks in seven games this year with a high of five against Boston University on April 9. Jones' average of 2.54 goals per game is second in the conference and his five man-up goals are tied with Ted Glesener and two others for the league lead.
Barretto stepped into the starting goalie job right away and has performed extremely well. He is among the nation's leaders in goals against average and save percentage. He has been named the conference's rookie and goalie of the week and gained national attention after being selected as the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's National Defensive Player of the Week from his work in the game against Boston University on April 9. He made eight saves and held the Terriers to four goals.
The season continues for the Black Knights on Tuesday with a visit by Lehigh for the Patriot League Quarterfinals at 4 p.m. at Michie Stadium.
