Big Innings Power Navy Past Baseball
April 24, 2016 | Baseball
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A couple of big innings allowed Navy to take a 7-3 victory over the Army West Point baseball team in game on Sunday afternoon at Maxwell Bishop Stadium.
The Black Knights (14-27, 5-10 PL) jumped on Navy starter Noah Song early with back-to-back hits by Kris Lindner and David Monge. Lindner would score on a pass ball to give Army an early 1-0 lead.
Freshman Tyler Giovinco rolled through the Navy lineup early on, retiring the first five batters he faced. A couple of two-out baserunners would give the Midshipmen life, but a groundout to second would allow the southpaw to get out of the jam unscathed.
Navy would manage to push across the game-tying run in the third inning. Back-to-back singles started the rally in the inning, although a heads-up snap throw by Keegan Vega from behind the plate behind Leland Knowles at second catches him napping for the first out of the inning. After a stolen base by Robert Currie, a single by Travis Blue plated Currie to knot things up at one apiece.
The Mids would blow the game open through the next two innings, putting up three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. After a one-out walk, two consecutive doubles plated the first two runs. A fielder's choice and a walk loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly to center would cap the scoring for the time being.
In the fifth inning, a leadoff walk followed by a triple, double and single all drove in a run to stretch the Navy lead to 7-1.
Army would respond with a couple of runs in the sixth to keep its hopes alive. A one-out single by Jon Rosoff started the rally for the Black Knights. Following Rosoff was John McCarthy with a single of his own before Ryan Levenhagen blasted a double to left center field which scored Rosoff. A Jacob Page sacrifice fly plated McCarthy in the next at bat.
The series finale is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
