Men’s Tennis Heads to Navy for Annual Star Match

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Army West Point men's tennis team saved the most exciting match for last this spring. The Black Knights will meet archrival Navy in the Star Match on Saturday, April 22, as part of the Star Series presented by USAA. The match is slated for a 1:00 p.m. first serve.

LAST TIME OUT
Army played two matches last weekend, both 4-1 victories over Lehigh and Boston University, to improve to 15-7 this season and a perfect 4-0 in the Patriot League.
The Black Knights were led by sophomore Michael Nguyen. His 2-0 record in both singles and doubles earned him Patriot League Player of the Week honors. Nguyen leads the team in singles victories with an 11-4 record this spring.
SCOUTING NAVY
Navy has won each of its first four league matches as well heading into the regular season finale. The Midshipmen are 19-8 overall and 18-3 when playing at the Naval Academy.
Austin Jones has played in the top singles flight for the Mids nearly all season. The senior owns a 16-3 record in 2016 with all 19 matches coming in the top position. He earned Patriot League Tournament MVP honors last year.
PATRIOT LEAGUE IMPLICATIONS
The winner of this match will claim the top seed in the Patriot League Championships set for next weekend in Bethlehem, Pa. The two service academies are the only programs to win the Patriot League since 2007.
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 97th time that the two programs have met as Navy holds the series edge at 60-36.
Army has been more competitive under the guidance of head coach Jim Poling in the series. A win for the Black Knights would even up Poling's record at 12-12 against Navy. The graduating four-year class is also going for its fourth regular season win in as many tries against the Midshipmen.
Two senior Cadets have had strong careers against the Mids. Austin McCasin has won all five doubles matches he has played against them while Harrison McCormick has won five singles matches against with one other match going unfinished.

Lehigh will be hosting the Patriot League Championships next weekend starting on Thursday, April 28 and running through Sunday, May 1.
