NYIT Walks Off Against Baseball in Midweek Tilt
April 20, 2016 | Baseball
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Neither Army West Point nor NYIT could manage to kick start its respective offenses, but a walk-off walk allowed the Bears to edge the Black Knights, 3-2, Wednesday afternoon from Angelo Lorenzo Memorial Field.
"We've just got to play ball," said head coach Matt Reid. "Their pitchers did a good job of competing today, and ours kept us in the game. We needed to find a way to get those runs in early on in the game."
The majority of Army's (14-24, 5-7 PL) production came from the beginning of its lineup with Kris Lindner, Trey Martin and Jon Rosoff hitting .500 with six of the team's seven hits.
"Kris, Trey and Jon all had good approaches at the plate, but we need that from everyone in the lineup," Reid commented. "We need everybody to have better approaches at the plate to score more runs. It can't be just a couple of guys."
The Black Knights opened the game with a couple of one-out hits from Martin and Rosoff. A groundout advanced the two baserunners into scoring position, but NYIT (15-18) starter Frank Valentino was able to work his way out of the jam.
In the home half, two Bears reached base, although neither of them was able to score the opening run. Matthew DeAngelis got the inning started with a single to center and advanced to second on an error.
Army broke through in the top of the second to take an early 1-0 lead. Center fielder Jacob Page scored on a fielder's choice by David Monge after earning a full-count walk with one out. NYIT responded in the bottom of the inning, however, pushing two runs across on a pair of hits.
John McCarthy would even the score at two apiece in the top of the fifth. After a couple of singles with one out by Lindner and Martin, Rosoff walked to load the bases.
Freshman Cam Opp, who came in relief of starter Patrick Gardner, retired the first five batters he faced, starting with the third out of the fourth inning.
Army tried to start a rally late as Lindner doubled to left center with two outs in the top of the ninth, but was unable to score.
In the bottom of the frame, a leadoff single allowed NYIT to manufacture the game-winning run. Justin French entered with one out and a runner on second before intentionally walking Joe Daru, who leads the Bears in eight offensive categories. Matt DeAngelis stepped into the box next and earned the game-winning free pass.
