Lafayette Wins Game Two, Sweeps Doubleheader
April 02, 2016 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Alex Woinski's pinch-hit three-run home run in the fifth inning broke a 2-2 tie and Lafayette swept the doubleheader from the Army West Point baseball team in a 6-3 triumph in game two at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field.
Army fell to 9-16 overall and 0-2 in Patriot League play, while Lafayette improved to 8-14 on the year and 2-0 in the conference. Lafayette won game one of Saturday's twinbill by a 4-0 final. Â
Jacob Page, Keegan Vega and Josh White recorded two hits apiece, while Kris Lindner, Jon Rosoff and John McCarthy each added one. Rosoff, Vega and Page were each responsible for driving in one run.
Army broke the ice in the bottom of the first inning when it loaded the bases with one down against Lafayette starting pitcher Mitch Leeds. A ground ball back to Leeds allowed him to cut down the lead runner at the plate, but a 3-2 pitch to Keegan Vega hit him on the knee and brought in a run. Leeds limited the damage there and left the inning after conceding one run.
The Black Knights doubled their advantage to 2-0 when Vega opened the bottom of the fourth inning with a single to the gap in right center. Three batters later, Page dropped a single into the opposite gap and Vega raced home from second to make it a two-run lead in favor of the home team.
Starting pitcher Jeremy Mortensen threw 4.2 innings and left the game with a man on first in the top of the fifth. He was replaced by fellow left-hander Patrick Gardner, who surrendered an RBI double to Jackson Kramer and a run-scoring single to Steven Cohen that tied the game at 2-2.
Army went down in order in the fifth as Lafayette righty Mitch Leeds settled in on the mound.
Following the 1-2-3 bottom half of the fifth, Lafayette plated four runs off Gardner (1-2) in its next trip to the plate. A leadoff single to center by Campbell Lipe started the rally before a single by Drew Ahern put runners on the corners for the pinch-hitter Woinski, who delivered a three-run shot over the left-centerfield fence to push Lafayette ahead 5-2. Lafayette added a fourth run on an RBI single to left by Kramer.
Leeds (1-1) cruised through a 1-2-3 sixth inning before handing over to David Giusti, who worked a scoreless seventh despite walking two Army hitters. Leeds pitched 6.0 innings and scattered six hits. Both runs he allowed were earned and he struck out five and walked three.
Army brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the eighth in the form of Trey Martin, after Lafayette opted for left-hander Ryan Callanan after Giusti loaded the bases with a walk to Matt Hudgins. Martin went down swinging and Page sent a deep drive to the warning track, but Andrew Landolfi ran it down to end the inning and preserve the four-run cushion.
Stu Schley tossed a perfect ninth as he remained in the game following a scoreless eighth in relief of Mike Gagliardi, who kept Lafayette off the board in the seventh.
Army added a run in the ninth on an RBI by Rosoff, but Callanan closed the game for Lafayette to collect his first save of the season.
The series resumes on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Black Knights and Leopards will play a doubleheader consisting of seven and nine innings, respectively, and the games will be broadcast online on the Patriot League Network.
Game Notes: Army wore its white jerseys with white pants and black caps.
