Long Ball Hinders Baseball against Crusaders
April 17, 2016 | Baseball
WORCESTER, Mass. – A pair of home runs hindered the Army West Point baseball team as it dropped game three at Holy Cross, 6-2, on Sunday afternoon.
Army (13-23, 4-7 PL) capitalized on a couple of early errors by the Crusaders (17-21, 7-4 PL) to take the lead in the first inning. After a one-out walk by Martin, back-to-back errors by the middle infielders on routine double-play balls loaded the bases for Stu Schley. The first baseman hit a sacrifice fly to open the scoring.
Holy Cross answered in the home half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. A walk and consecutive singles loaded the bases before a replicate of Schley's performance drew the game even. A single by Josh Hassell would push the Crusaders ahead.
In the second inning, Jacob Page doubled to get the rally started. He would score from third on another error two batters later to tie the score.
The score remained the same throughout the next few innings before a solo shot by Nick Lovullo led off the bottom of the fifth. The Crusaders would add three insurance runs the following inning to put the game out of reach from the Black Knights. A two-run homer by Hassell followed Alex Voitik's leadoff triple in the inning. Bobby Indeglia plated Cloney later for the final run of the game.
Game two is scheduled to start around 3:30 p.m.
