Keller Deals Gem for Bucknell in Game Three
April 10, 2016 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point baseball team dropped the third game of its series against Bucknell, 4-2, behind the Bison's strong pitching performance from Dan Keller on Sunday at Doubleday Field.
The Bison (14-19, 5-2 PL) worked ahead early, starting the game with a leadoff single and a double. They would score two batters later on a groundout to first base. Tyler Giovinco settled down after that, however, as he fanned a couple to get out of the jam. He would set Bucknell down in order the following inning. A leadoff walk by the visitors was erased with a 4-6-3 double play.
The Black Knights (11-19, 2-4 PL) scratched a run across in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at one apiece. Jon Rosoff started the inning by reaching on an error. He would be plated three batters later as Trey Martin slapped a two-out single down the right field line, scoring Rosoff from third.
Bucknell would respond in the third inning to retake the lead. After having the first two batters retired, a two-out, bases loaded walk kept the inning alive. A double down the right field line by Joe Ogren broke the tie before Spencer Stokes traded places with him for the second run of the inning.
Keller needed just seven pitches to retire the side in the bottom of the third inning as part of his complete game effort. The senior righty threw 77 pitches in the game, surrendering two unearned runs on just four hits and no walks while striking out four.
Another 4-6-3 double play induced by Giovinco would slow down the potential rally after Bucknell started the frame with a walk and a single. The lefty hurler for Army would get himself out of the jam by fielding the squeeze attempt and firing to Ryan Levenhagen at first in time to head back to the dugout unscathed.
With the third through fifth spots due up in the home half, the Cadets were looking to chip away at the lead. John McCarthy blasted the first pitch of the inning to deep left center, but Danny Rafferty was able to track it down from left field to prevent the leadoff extra base hit. Catcher Keegan Vega managed a two-out single, but that would be the only offensive production of the inning for Army.
Ogren's added to his production in the third game of the series as he laced his second RBI double of the game to score Rafferty. With runners on the corners with two outs, second baseman Josh White snared a sharp one-hopper to end the inning.
The Black Knights cut the deficit in half in the sixth inning that started with David Monge getting hit by a pitch. A two-out hit by Vega kept the inning alive, and a throwing error by Mayer allowed Rosoff to score.
The series finale is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
