Late Rally Pushes Softball Past Marist
March 06, 2016 | Softball
FAIRFAX, Va. – The Army West Point softball team was able to put together a sixth inning rally Sunday morning to defeat Hudson Valley Rival Marist, 4-3, in the final day of the Patriot Classic. This is the team's first time beating the Red Foxes since 2013.
"I thought today and the entire weekend was a great learning experience for the team.=," said head coach Michelle DePolo. "Each weekend of play thus far has brought along new scenarios and situations we need become proficient with as the season gets moves along, and this weekend was no exception. The situations we faced this weekend will pay dividends to our success in the future if we can learn and adjust moving forward."
The Red Foxes (6-3) were on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Black Knights (7-7) were held scoreless until the top of the third when Ashley Yoo smacked an RBI single allowing Taylor Gaff to score, which knotted the game at 1-1. Marist also tallied a run in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
Both teams were denied scoring chances during the fourth and fifth innings, but Army exploded in the top of the sixth so seal the victory.
As a pinch hitter, Carrie Reilly hit a single and advanced to second on a throw. Gladys Esparza-Gallegos moved to third which forced Hailey Megge home for a run. Maddie Kim hit one down the first base line to tally an RBI on Esparza-Gallegos' run. Mae Wadyka then hit a one-run single and Reilly rounded the bases to put the Cadets up 4-3.
Renee Poirier relieved Kristen West in the circle for the seventh to pick up another save. She had two strikeouts and a groundout to clinch Army's victory over Marist.
"This weekend our pitchers were tremendous and overall our defense did a great job behind them," added DePolo. "Our offense wasn't quite as productive but we still found ways to scrape runs across. Despite the hard loss to George Mason we scored a run on only three base runners the entire game.
"Each game this weekend called upon someone new to do something key for our team. Our results have been a true team effort, which is something very special."
Army returns to action Sunday for a game against George Mason at 11:30 a.m.
