Harvey Locked into NCAAs After Day One of EIWAs
March 05, 2016 | Wrestling
PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior Brian Harvey led the Army West Point wrestling team on the first day of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships by securing a berth to the NCAA Championships from Jadwin Gymnasium on Saturday.
"I'm glad for Brian that he is assured a spot at the NCAA tournament, but he knows there is more work to be done tomorrow," said head coach Kevin Ward. "He is in a good spot in the semifinals, and we have five other guys still alive to go to the NCAAA tournament.
"Right now, our focus is putting six guys through to the NCAAs. We want to continue to fight hard and score as many team points as possible."
Harvey won by a 17-2 technical fall in the round of 16 before advancing to the semifinals with his 90th-career win. The 174-pounder's milestone victory came in the second tiebreak period after an escape in the first and riding out the final 30 seconds of the match.
Fellow senior Bryce Barnes also moved onto the semifinals after a pair of wins. The sixth-seeded 197-pounder won 7-5 before upsetting 21st-ranked and third-seeded Michael Woulfe from Navy, 9-8, to avenge his setback on Feb. 20.
Matt Kelly, Russell Parsons Jr. and Samson Imonode will all compete on the second day of the conference championships in the wrestlebacks. Parsons Jr., who is ranked 24th in the nation and seeded seventh, earned a shutout technical fall before dropping a hard-fought bout in the quarterfinals. After being knotted at two heading into the final period, the Clinton, N.J., native let top-seeded John Boyle of American escape early in the frame, but could not find a way to take him down. He would rebound with a 7-5 win over Binghamton's Vincent DePrez.
Kelly advanced to the quarterfinals after top-seeded C.J. Cobb of Penn forfeited the opening match. The Damascus, Md., native went on to split a pair of two-point decisions. He dropped a 7-5 quarterfinal bout to American's Tom Page before topping Danny Reed of Columbia, 3-1.
Imonode fought back with a pair of wrestleback victories after suffering a 16-1 technical fall to Penn's Lorenzo Thomas in the opening round. The junior from Phoenix, Ariz., stayed alive with a 5-4 decision before needing overtime to advance to the second day with a 9-7 victory in the first sudden victory period.
The Black Knights will return to the mat tomorrow starting at 10 a.m. for the semifinals and the third-round of the consolation bracket.
