Softball Falls to Marist in Extra Innings
March 04, 2016 | Softball
FAIRFAX, Va. – The Army West Point softball team fell to Hudson Valley rival Marist Friday night, 2-1, in the first game of the Patriot Classic. The Black Knights and Red Foxes were knotted at 1-1 after seven which forced the game into extra innings. Marist was able to tally a score in the top of the eighth and hold off the Cadets to win the game in eight.
Â
The teams held each other scoreless until the fourth inning. Army (4-7) denied Marist (5-1) from getting on base in the first inning with three quick outs. Ashley Yoo put herself in scoring position at the bottom of the first after she hit a double, but two outs by the Red Foxes left her stranded on second.
Â
In the second, Marist had players on second and third bases with one out. Kristen McPeek nabbed a double play when she caught a fly-out to right field then threw home to deny Marist from scoring.
Â
The Black Knights were able to get a score in the bottom of the fourth. Yoo led off the Cadets with a triple. McPeek then reached first on a fielder's choice, which also sent Yoo home for an Army run and RBI.
Â
The fifth inning Marist and Army had three-up and three-down to push the game into the sixth. The Red Foxes were able to tie the score at 1-1 off an Army error. Neither team could score in the seventh inning, which pushed the game into extra innings.
Â
Playing under international tiebreaker regulations, the Red Foxes began the eighth inning with a player on second. Marist hit a sacrifice fly which allowed the Red Foxes to gain another run and lead the Black Knights 2-1.
Â
Army was then up to bat and Tyler McKinney started on second base. Kasey McCravey had a sacrifice hit advancing McKinney to third. Yoo was then walked and stole second. The Red Foxes were able to hold the Black Knights scoreless however with a strikeout and groundout to close the game.
Â
McPeek earned Army's only RBI on the night, while Ashley Yoo recorded two hits and Alee Rashenskas had one hit.
Â
On Saturday, the Cadets will take on Howard (10 a.m.) and the host Patriots right after at 12:15 p.m. The Black Knights will close-out the weekend with back-to-back games opposite Marist (9 a.m.) and George Mason (11:15 a.m.) on Sunday.
"This weekend we will face three very different teams," said DePolo. "We see Marist a lot since they are our neighbor geographically; they always put together a highly competitive, well-rounded team. We had some great games versus George Mason two years ago and I think both them and Howard are going to be great matches as we move forward into the development of the season."
