WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point baseball team returns to West Point on Wednesday afternoon following its annual spring break trip to Florida. The Black Knights will host Columbia at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field at 3:30 p.m.
Army went 5-2 last week in the sunshine state to improve to 8-10 on the season. Wednesday's contest marks the first game in the state of New York for Columbia as the Lions wrap up a 15-game season-opening road swing against Army. The Lions bring a 3-11 record into the game following an 8-6 win over No. 24 Long Beach State to snap a nine-game losing skid.
Last time out, Army split a doubleheader with Harvard and took two of three games from the Crimson. John McCarthy extended his hitting streak to 14 games and he continues to lead the Patriot League in a number of offensive categories. The Black Knights' outfielder has 22 RBI, a .589 slugging percentage and three home runs and is fifth in batting average at .375.
In addition to McCarthy's offensive success, Kris Lindner leads the conference in runs scored (23), is third in on-base percentage (.477) and is tied for the league lead in stolen bases (8).
Army has played one home game so far, a 14-8 loss to Hofstra on March 6. Daniel Burggraaf, who made his first-career start and pitched 2.0 innings in a no-decision, gave up three runs on one hit and struck out two. The Black Knights used seven different pitchers in the game and walked 13 Hofstra batters.
Last season, Army met Columbia in New York City and came out on the losing end of a 13-10 slugfest. Jacob Page went 2-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Black Knights offensively, while Alex Dickerson and Brandon Lee each added base hits.
