California Snaps Army’s Win Streak
March 12, 2016 | Men's Gymnastics
BERKELEY, Calif. –Jesse Glenn, Seth Cannon, Nathan Goff set career marks, and Leo Genders tied his personal best, finishing among the leaders in their respective events, but California captured all six team events along with claiming the individual winners in outpointing the Army West Point men's gymnastics team 436.10-412.45 at Haas Pavilion Friday evening.
The loss snapped No. 12 Army's (4-3) modest three-meet win streak in the Black Knights' first dual competition against the Golden Bears since 1998.
Glenn posted a career mark of 14.9 in a third-place showing on pommel horse, and was also runner-up on high bar (14.95). Goff broke his career mark with a 14.8 on high bar to place fourth, Cannon's 13.7 career score on parallel bars earned him fifth place with Genders tying his personal best on vault (14.8) to finish third.
Elliott Herman and Genders each posted a 14.20 on floor exercise turning in Army's top scores in that event with Glenn chipping in with a 14.0. Andre Hufnagel posted the Black Knights' second highest score on pommel horse (13.80) with Elijah-Ty Phelps next (13.40).
Cole Casanova tied for fourth place on still rings posting a 13.800 with Goff and Ryan Wilson close behind earning scores of 13.50 and 13.40, respectively.
Joining Genders on vault was Glenn who finished fifth with a 14.7 followed by Sam Kusnitz and Joe Pritts who turned in identical scores of 13.8 as the Black Knights registered their highest team score of the meet recording a 70.75. Casanova claimed Army's second highest individual score on parallel bars (13.65) with Kusnitz and Glenn recording 13.50s.
"We did very well, said Van Everen who mixed up his lineup throughout the meet.
"We were resting a few of our guys in three different events," explained the Army mentor. "Our intent is to put the full team in Sunday's meet.
"Our scores did not necessarily represent an excellent meet, but our performance was in line for what we want to do with regards to getting ready for our conference (Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference) championship. That is just hitting routines.
"We had a jumbo lineup and the team did well," added Van Everen. "We had four major mistakes out of 25 routines, so that is not bad. We were not worried about our scores. We are where we want to be and we are trying to stay healthy and prepare for the conference. That is what is on our plate right now."
The Black Knights close out their dual meet schedule Sunday in a triangular meet with the host Golden Bars along with Washington, a club team, at 12 p.m. PT.
