Gymnasts Finish Second In Tri-Meet Hosted by California
March 13, 2016 | Men's Gymnastics
BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 12 Army West Point men's gymnastics turned in a strong showing, but No. 9 California's breakout performance led to a school record 442.15 in the Golden Bears' triangular sweep at Haas Pavilion Sunday afternoon.
The Black Knights scored a 415.90 to take runner-up honors followed by No. 17 Washington's 403.05. The Golden Bears swept all six team event and claimed the individual winners as well.
Freshman Cole Casanova, junior Sam Kusnitz and senior Jesse Glenn turned in Army's top scores of the meet. Casanova took third in the all-around (83.65), set a season high tying with Glenn for the silver on floor exercise (14.7), and tied his personal best as the Black Knights' top scorer on still rings (14.5) in placing fifth. He recorded a 13.2 on pommel horse and high bar, a 13.55 on parallel bars and a 14.5 on vault in rounding out his scoring marks.
Glenn took third on vault behind a season high 14.9, which is just shy of his career mark (15.00), and was Army's top gymnast on parallel bars with a season-high 14.55 in placing fourth.
Kusnitz, who tied for fifth on vault (14.7), shared sixth place with Nathan Goff on high bar (14.25) and posted Army's second highest score on parallel bars with a career-high 14.25. Sophomore Andrew Hufnagel was the Black Knights' top scorer on pommel horse placing fourth (14.10).
"We did a little better the second time this weekend against California," stated Army West Point head coach Doug Van Everen. "We did have a few mistakes, but we also are moving our lineup around a little bit trying to figure out the best formula for the conference championship. We definitely learned a lot today and team is moving forward. Cole (Casanova) did a great job for us in the all-around."
The Black Knights, who closed out their dual meet slate with a 4-3 mark, are idle this week as they prepare for the USAG Championships, March 25-26, being hosted by Springfield College.
Army took third the last time it competed at the USAG's in 2014, led by Glenn who copped five USAG All-America certificates – all-around, high bar, parallel bars, floor exercise and pommel horse
