WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's tennis team capped off a perfect weekend by defeating Fordham 4-3 and NJIT 6-1 on Saturday, Feb. 27 after beating Marist 6-1 a day earlier. The Black Knights now boast a 10-3 record while the Rams drop to 1-2 and the Highlanders move to 3-5 this spring.
Army avenged last season's 4-3 loss to Fordham. The two squads split the singles bouts with a couple marathon matches that each went the way of the Rams.
Senior Carolyn Pitman topped Estelle Wong of Fordham in the first singles flight by a score of 6-0, 6-3. The victory was notable for Pitman as Wong was a second team All-Atlantic 10 selection last year and had not lost this spring heading into today.
The divide in singles was enough for the Black Knights after securing the doubles point as two Army pairs remained undefeated on the season. Senior Eva Sung and freshman Rugile Valuniate gutted out a 7-5 win in the top doubles match while Pitman and freshman Kirby Einck pushed their undefeated record this year to 7-0 with a decisive 6-1 win in the second doubles slot. Sung and Valuniate also won in the top doubles match of the NJIT meet to improve to 4-0 this season.
The Black Knights had a few tough matches against NJIT. The only singles match that went into a third set was Haley O'Connor of Army versus Amanda Helminsky of the Highlanders in the sixth singles spot. O'Connor ultimately won 6-7, 7-6, 10-6 for her second victory of the spring season.
The closest doubles flight was in the second slot which saw Pitman and junior Nancy Porter edge out a 6-5 (7-5) win. For Pitman, it was her 10th doubles win this spring in as many matches with her third different partner.
Next weekend, the Black Knights welcome Quinnipiac, Siena, and Rhode Island. The Bobcats will visit first on Friday, March 4, for a 3 p.m. meeting.
