Penn State Sweeps Baseball Doubleheader

CARY, N.C. – After winning game one of Saturday's twinbill by a 5-4 final score, Penn State completed the doubleheader sweep of the Army West Point baseball team with an 11-0 victory in game two on Saturday evening at the USA Baseball National Training Center.
Penn State moved to 2-1 on the season and Army fell to 0-3.
Justin Hagenman scattered four hits over 7.0 scoreless innings for Penn State and fanned six, while freshman Jacob Carte took the loss in his collegiate debut for Army. Carte pitched 3.1 innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits. He struck out three and walked five.
Offensively, Kris Lindner and Ryan Levenhagen each posted two hits and Jacob Page singled for the Black Knights.
Penn State had a pair of three-hit performances by Tyler Kendall and Ryan Sloniger, while Jim Haley and Conlin Hughes each had two hits. Sloniger led the Nittany Lions with a double and four RBIs in the win.
Penn State plated two runs in the second and added a third in the top of the third inning before breaking the game open with a three-run sixth inning. Hughes and Haley each had RBI singles in the sixth and Greg Guers added a sacrifice fly against Army rookie reliever Cam Opp.
Opp pitched 4.2 innings and allowed three runs on four hits in his first college action. He struck out one and walked two others.
The Nittany Lions piled on five runs in the top of the ninth to run the final score to 11-0.
Army closes its weekend with an 11 a.m. first pitch against Monmouth on Sunday.
