Softball Falls Short to the Red Flash

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Army West Point softball team dropped an 8-5 decision to Saint Francis in game one of the Seahawk Softball Bash. The Black Knights totaled five RBIs, 12 hits and two doubles in the loss.

Gladys Esparza-Gallegos led the Black Knights with two RBIs on one double. Nena Riccoboni stroked a double and notched one RBI, while Caroline Smith had a team-high three hits and an RBI on a single. Emily Gray tallied two runs, two hits and had one RBI, and Ashley Yoo recorded two hits for Army.

The Red Flash jumped out to a 4-1 lead over the Black Knights in the first two innings. Gray was able to tally a run for Army after Smith hit an RBI single to right field. Both Army and Saint Francis would record identical scores in each of the next five innings to close out the game at 8-5.

In the third, Riccoboni hit a double up the left side to send Alee Rashenskas home to notch Army's second run. In the next inning, Kristen West stepped up to the mound to relieve Smith from pitching duties.

Esparza-Gallegos stroked a two-run double driving in Smith and Gray as Army drew to 7-4 in favor of Saint Francis in the bottom of the fourth.

The Black Knights scored their final run of the game when Gray hit a single to right field, allowing Mae Wadyka to score in the fifth inning.

The bases were loaded for the Red Flash at the top of the seventh, but Kristen McPeek denied them from scoring with a catch at right field to bring Army up to bat.

The Black Knights' chance to rally was denied by Ketarah DeVries who held Army hitless and picked up a save in the bottom of the seventh.

Army now resides at 0-1 on the season and returns to action shortly with a game against Eastern Kentucky at approximately 8:45 p.m.
