Army Improves to 9-2 with Win Over Mercy

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's basketball team closed out the nonleague portion of its schedule with a 90-48 victory over Mercy College on Saturday afternoon at Christl Arena.
Army finishes nonconference play 9-2 after the win, while Mercy falls to 1-9 overall.
Sophomore Madison Hovren led Army with a game-high 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting, while adding a game-high-tying seven rebounds. Junior Destinee Morris added 12 points off the bench, knocking down 4-of-6 from three-point range, and freshman Morgann Yancey tallied a career-best 12 points on a perfect 4-of-4 showing from long range.
Sophomore Jess Lewis added nine points, junior Lena' Hicks contributed eight points and five boards, and freshman Libby Tacka scored six points on 2-of-2 three-point shooting.
Latisha Clark paced Mercy with 12 points and seven rebounds.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Army moves to 10-5 all-time versus Mercy. Saturday was the first meeting between the schools since the 1989-90 season and was the Black Knights' first contest against the Mavericks at the Division I level.
- The Cadets extended their home winning streak to 23 games after the victory, with their last loss at Christl Arena coming in the Patriot League semifinals against Lehigh on March 9, 2015.
- Army also improved its regular-season home winning streak to 27 games, with the Black Knights' last regular-season home defeat coming against Navy on Jan. 10, 2015.
- Army opens with at least nine wins in its first 11 games for the second year in a row, and for the ninth time in the program's 40-year history.
- Army made 13 three-pointers on 21 attempts for its most threes of the season.
- The Black Knights improve to 37-14 versus New York-based schools under 11th-year head coach Dave Magarity.
- Army went 4-1 against New York teams this year, with wins over LIU Brooklyn, St. Francis Brooklyn, Wagner and Mercy, and a loss to UAlbany.
- Army's 32 points scored and six points allowed in the first quarter were both season bests.
- Hovren (20 points), Destinee Morris (12), Yancey (12), Lewis (9), Hicks (8), and Tacka all scored at least six points to mark the fourth time that has happened this season.
- The feat was previously achieved during wins over Fairleigh Dickinson (Nov. 28), Wagner (Dec. 5), and Delaware (Dec. 11).

- Army closed the first quarter on a 14-0 run and outscored Mercy 32-6 in the period to control a 26-point lead that grew to 51 by the third quarter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Army led, 32-6, after the first quarter and closed the period on a 14-0 run that lasted the final 3:40.
- Hovren paced all players with 12 points in the opening frame.
- Thirteen players saw the floor for the Cadets during the second quarter, while Yancey and Mercy's Casey Sullivan each finished with six points during the period.
- The Black Knights doubled up on the Mavericks in the second frame, outscoring the visitors 24-12, to enter the halftime break with a 56-18 advantage.
- Army shot a perfect 6-for-6 from three-point range in the second half, including a 5-of-5 performance from deep in the third quarter.
- Lewis and Destinee Morris each added a pair of triples, while Yancey connected on her only attempt in the third frame to help give the Black Knights an 80-31 lead at the end of three.
- Yancey hit Army's only triple of the fourth quarter, as the Cadets finished the game 13-of-21 from long range, marking their most of the season.
