Men’s Track Competes at Penn State National Invite
January 29, 2016 | Men's Track and Field
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Army West Point men's track and field team completed the first day of competition at the Penn State National Invitational from Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track on Friday.
Sophomore pole vaulter Lee Bares continues to impress, setting a new personal-best after clearing the 5.22-meter bar. Bares is now 0.02 meters away from Darrin Hinman's program record set in 1997.
"I thought Lee's performance tonight was outstanding," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "I was more impressed by the way he competed than the actual mark. He was hitting bars in succession on his first attempt and beat some guys that are top-20 on the national list. That tells you he is dialed in to what he is doing. He has his sights set on our school record which has stood for almost 20 years. He is looking good at the right time."
Additionally, Taylor Andrews and Tyler Davis both advanced to the semifinals of their sprints. Andrews recorded a 60-meter hurdles time of 8.31 in the preliminaries. Davis recorded the 10th-best preliminary time in the 60-meter dash in the field of 36 with a time of 6.88.
Freshman Kenneth Brinson placed 11th out of 27 in the weight throw with a distance of 17.24 meters.
The Penn State National Invitational will conclude tomorrow with action starting at 9:45 a.m.
