Men’s Basketball Falls at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Colgate built a four-point halftime lead and led by as many as 24 points in an eventual 80-66 victory over the Army West Point men's basketball team on Wednesday evening at Cotterell Court.
The Raiders improved to 3-2 in the Patriot League and 8-9 on the year, while Army dropped to 2-3 in the conference and 11-6 overall.
Colgate was led by Austin Tillotson's 18-point effort, Jordan Swopshire scored 14 and Sean O'Brien chipped in 11. As a team, Colgate shot 53.4 percent from the field and forced Army into 20 turnovers.
Army's offense was paced by Dylan Cox and Larry Toomey, who scored eight points apiece. Kyle Wilson and Nathan Dodge each contributed nine in the losing effort.
The Raiders held a four-point lead at halftime after shooting 54.2 percent (13-for-24) from the field. Army turned the ball over 12 times in the first 20 minutes, but remaining in the game thanks to a 19-10 rebounding advantage. The first half was tightly contested with the home team holding the largest lead, a five-point cushion, after a Swopshire jumper at 2:46 that made it 33-28.
Consecutive layups by O'Brien doubled Colgate's lead to 44-36 early in the second half prior to Adam Roe knocking down his second three of the night. Colgate scored the next six points, five on consecutive possessions, to open up an 11-point lead and force Army to call a timeout at 14:49. The Raiders' run continued with a layup by Dana Batt and then a turnover led to an open three for Tom Rivard that made it 55-39 a minute later.
Army scored the next four points, but Colgate's lead stretched to 20 points on consecutive threes by Swopshire and Tillotson and a pair at the line by Jordan Robertson.
Colgate's lead ballooned to 72-48 on another Tillotson three and a steal and layup by O'Brien with 8:40 on the clock. The Raiders eventually came away with the 14-point win.
Army returns to action on Sunday when it hosts American at Christl Arena. Opening tip is set for noon and the game will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network.
