Softball Falls To No. 1 Lehigh In PL Tournament Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Emily Bausher, the Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, threw a three-hit shutout and helped her own cause driving in the first run in a three-run fifth to lead top-seed Lehigh to a 3-0 victory over No. 4 Army West Point in the opening round of the 2015 softball tournament at Leadership Park.
Bausher (19-5) did not allow the Black Knights (23-26-1) into scoring position, striking out five and issuing just two walks facing 25 batters, in handing Army West Point its first opening round tournament loss since 2011.
First team all-league designated player Emily Gray (2-for-2) registered two of Army West Point's three hits. She stroked a single with one out in the second inning and laced her second hit with two outs in the third, but was retired on a fielder's choice and groundout, respectively.
Defensive Player of the Year and first team all-league third baseman Kasey McCravey recorded the Black Knights' second hit in the game with two outs in the top of the third, but a flyout ended the inning.
Sophomore hurler Kristen West (8-10) kept Lehigh off the scoreboard over the first four innings, stranding six runners as she worked her way out of jams. After yielding a pair of back-to-back hits with one out in the bottom of the first, West got out safely on a flyout and foul ball popup.
A flyout and groundout ended Lehigh's threat in the second inning following a pair of singles, while McCravey's double play tagged Morgan Decker, who doubled, heading to third and threw out Jessica Calvina heading to first in the third inning.
After issuing her second walk of the game in the fourth inning with one out, West got out on an infield popup and flyout to left field.
Lehigh capitalized on four hits to score three runs in the bottom of the fifth with Cassie Waggy's (1-for-2) two-run single up the middle closing out the scoring after Bausher (2-for-3) knocked in the first run with a single to right center.
The Black Knights take on No. 3 Colgate in a losers' bracket game on Friday at 1:05 p.m. The No. 3 Raiders fell to No. 2 Bucknell, 3-1, in the final game on Thursday. Lehigh and Bucknell wll meet in a winners' bracket game to start off Friday's competition at 10:35 a.m. The third and final game of the day willbe played at 3:35 p.m.
DIAMOND NOTES: Junior Kasey McCravey was presented the Defensive Player of the Year plaque prior to the start of the game ... the Army West Point-Lehigh game is the first Patriot League Tournament game played at the Mountain Hawks' new facility, Leadership Park.
Army West Point takes on Colgate in a losers' bracket game on Friday. The Raiders swept the Black Knights the first weekend in April, 5-1, 3-2 (10), and 5-4, with the final two losses by a single run. Holly Geranen's solo home run in the top of the 10th snapped a 2-2 tie lifting Colgate to the win in the second game, and the Raiders nipped Army West Point's rally in the sixth in the final game of the series.
