Army Suffers One-Run Loss To Lafayette Sunday

EASTON, Pa. - Jenna Didio's fielder's choice RBI delivered Miranda Skural for the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to lift Lafayette to a 4-3 win over Army in the third game of the Patriot League softball series Sunday at Metzgar Fields.
The Leopards rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the final two innings with Bryn Gornick's two-out solo home run in the sixth tying the game 3-3. In the go-ahead seventh, Skural ignited the rally with a leadoff double. With one out she advanced to third on Kristyn Marinelli's single to left center field and crossed on Didio's wfielder's choice in the walk-off win as the Leopards improved to 1-5 in the conference.
Army took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Alee Rashenskas' RBI single to left field delivering Kasey McCravey, but fell behind 2-1 as Lafayette tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first and snapped it in the second in knocking out freshman starter Aja Brechtel.
With one out and Lafayette leading 2-1 in the bottom of the second, Kristen West took over the circle and retired 10 straight batters.
Army (14-19, 5-4 PL) pulled ahead 3-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Gladys Esparza-Gallegos' single knocked in McCravey, who reached on an error, and she crossed on Emily Gray's fielder's choice RBI.
After being touched for her first hit with one out in the bottom of the fifth, West retired the next four batters before Gornick blasted a home run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game 3-3, then was charged with the loss in the seventh after yielding a pair of hits to slip to 5-6.
Lindsey Cherry went the distance on a five-hitter with just two of the three runs earned in improving to 2-7. She did not allow Army to reach scoring position over the final four frames.
Esparza-Gallegos collected two of Army's five hits along with an RBI and run scored. McCravey scored twice and Rashenskas and Gray each had an RBI.
Army returns home to take on St. Peter's in a non-league doubleheader Tuesday.
DIAMOND NOTES: Gladys Esparza-Gallegos batted .600 (6-for-10) with two runs batted in and four runs scored in the three-game series with Lafayette ... Emily Gray hit .444 (4-for-9) with two RBI and four runs scored ... Alex Gaff batted .375 with four runs batted in and a run scored ,,, Alee Rashenskas and Xiomara Perez each drove in three runs and Kasey McCravey scored four times ... Army outscored Lafayette 19-9 and led 28-17 in hits along with 18 RBI taking two of the three-game series ... Caroline Smith, who batted .429 with two RBI and a run scored, recorded both wins against Lafayette posting a 2.92 ERA.
