Women's Rugby Claims Title at Virginia Beach 7s Tournament

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Army West Point women's rugby team wrapped up regular season action at the USA Rugby Virginia Beach Sevens Tournament, claiming the championships with wins over service academy rivals Air Force and VCU. 
On Saturday, Army West Point kicked the tournament off with a 33-0 win over Air Force on a rainy afternoon meeting. They moved on defeat VCU by a mark of 63-0 on Sunday morning to take the top prize.
In game one, Ashley Mohr got things started, scoring back-to-back tries in the first and second minutes, whit Nicole Heavirland adding the conversion following the second score, lifting the lead to 12-0 early on. 
In the fifth minute, Allison Wilson earned the final score of the half, with Heavirland adding the conversion, sending the Black Knights into the break with the 19-0 lead. 
Kate Roose set the pace following the break, scoring in the first minute. Heavirland's kick put Army West Point up 26-0. Junior Allie McDonald closed out the scoring in the sixth minute of the second half, as Heavirland booted her fourth kick of the afternoon, securing the 33-0 victory .
The Cadets continued their dominance in game two, posting a dominant 63-0 shutout over VCU in game two. 
McDonald posted the game's first points in the first minute with Heavirland converting the kick to put Army West Point up 7-0. Roose answered in the third minute, with Heavirland again booting the kick, earning a 14-0 lead. 
In the fourth minute, Heavirland posted a try and conversion and was followed by a successful try from Lindy Clark in the fifth. Heavirland scored her second of the game, in the final seconds, posting her fifth conversion of the half (on five attempts) to put the Black Knights up 35-0 through one half. 
Army West Point kept the pressure on in the second half as Kirsten Redmon posted a score in the first minute. Clark scored in the second minute and Chandler Cole added try in the third as Heavirland continued her perfect afternoon of kicking, to earn the 56-0 advantage. 
Clark scored her third of the tournament in the fifth minute to close out the scoring, with Heavirland posting her ninth conversion of the game, to secure the 63-0 win. 
The Cadets will return to West Point on May 2-3 when they host the American Collegiate Rugby Association (ACRA) Sevens Championships from Anderson Rugby Complex.
