Women's Rugby Completes Perfect Day One of ACRA Tournament

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Army West Point women's rugby team completed a perfect opening day of the American Collegiate Rugby Association (ACRA) Championships, knocking off undefeated Norwich, service academy rival Navy and Harvard from Anderson Rugby Complex.
The Black Knights opened the afternoon with a 29-12 win over Harvard before moving on to upset undefeated Norwich by a score of 14-7. They capped off the afternoon with a victory over service academy rival Navy, defeating the Midshipmen by a mark of 52-0.
In game one, Harvard scored first in the second minute, but a try from Kate Roose and successful conversion from Nicole Heavirland tied the score at 7-7 in the third minute.
Allie McDonald scored in the sixth minute, with Heavirland again booting the kick. Carissa Pekny posted a score in the eighth minute, sending Army West Point into the break with the 19-7 advantage.
Harvard again got the scoring going to open the second half, posting a try in the second minute to cut Army West Point's lead to 24-12.
Heavirland sealed the deal for the Black Knights in the sixth minute, posting her first try of the afternoon to send Army West Point to a 29-12 victory.
The Black Knights advanced to face undefeated Norwich, a team which had not seen a loss in 63 matches. Rosse and Heavirland teamed up in the second minute to put the Black Knights up 7-0 early on, but a score from Norwich in stoppage time of the first half knotted the game up at 7-7.
Both teams were unable to find the try zone in the second half until Lindy Clark capitalized off of a long Allison Wilson run. Heavirland continued her successful afternoon of kicking, and Army West Point earned the 14-7 victory.
Army West Point would move on to defeat service academy rival Navy by a score of 52-0 in the final game of the afternoon, improving to 3-0 in pool play.
Action will continue tomorrow as the Black Knights wrap up pool play with a contest against American International at 9 a.m. Semifinals and finals are slated to continue throughout the afternoon.
