BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Senior right-hander Emily Bausher struck out nine firing a two-hit shutout and Morgan Decker drove in a pair of runs as host Lehigh defeated Army West Point, 3-0, in the final game of the Patriot League softball series Sunday afternoon at Leadership Park.
The Mountain Hawks, who clinched a playoff berth to the league tournament last week, improved to 33-7 overall and stands atop the conference standings at 13-2 after taking two of the three-game series from the Black Knights (22-24-1, 9-9 PL).
The win over Army West Point, combined with Boston University's 9-3 victory over Colgate gives the Mountain Hawks their fourth consecutive Patriot League regular season championship and 20th regular season title overall. Lehigh will host the Patriot League Tournament at Leadership Park May 7-9.
Army West Point threatened in the top of the first inning with a pair of hits by Kasey McCravey and Kristen McPeek to opposite fields, but a double play eliminated McCravey and a flyout stranded McPeek at first base.
The Black Knights' defense kept the Mountain Hawks off the scoreboard over the first two innings starting with back-to-back spectacular diving catches by center fielder Tyler McKinney and left fielder Hailey Megge followed by a strikeout in the first inning.
McKinney pulled up with another dramatic catch to start off the second inning. After yielding a hit with two outs, West got out of the inning on a grounder to the shortstop.
Lehigh capitalized in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of run on three hits with Decker's two-out single delivering both in staking Bausher to a 2-0 lead. The Mountain Hawks added a run in the next inning.
Bausher, who was tagged with the 2-1 series opening loss to the Black Knights, retired 19 straight batters after yielding a pair of hits in the first inning, as she moved to 17-5.
The reigning Patriot League Pitcher of the Year did not issue a walk to the 22 batters she faced, along with striking out four straight batters twice in registering nine overall.
The Black Knights are the lone Patriot League team to close out conference play this weekend, and will have to wait for the final results next weekend. Army West Point will be the No. 4 seed in the Patriot League Tournament unless Boston University (7-8) sweeps its three-game series at Bucknell.
Holy Cross was a contender heading into the weekend, but lost two games to Bucknell to stand 6-9 heading into its season finale against Lafayette (1-14). A sweep of the Leopards would give the Crusaders a 9-9 mark, but they would lose the tie-breaker to the Black Knights who swept them the opening weekend of league play.  Lehigh visits Colgate (9-6) in the league finale with seedings determined this weekend.
Army closes out its regular-season schedule Wednesday hosting Sacred Heart in a non-league doubleheader.
