WEST POINT, N.Y. - Brigit Ieuter fired a four-hitter and knocked in a pair of runs in a 5-1 victory in the first game, and Holly Geranen (4-for-5) drilled a solo home run in the top of the 10th inning as Colgate outlasted Army 3-2 in the nightcap in sweeping a Patriot League softball doubleheader from the Black Knights Wednesday at the Army Softball Complex.
Army (12-17, 3-2 PL) suffered its first conference losses of the season after opening league play sweeping Holy Cross over the weekend. Colgate (8-10, 4-1 PL) claimed it second and third straight conference wins.
"This is a pivotal series for conference standings," noted Army coach Michelle DePolo, and luck just wasn't on our side tonight.
"I thought our pitchers and defense had another great showing overall. We need to come back tomorrow with a better offensive game plan as a team and individual hitters, and in turn put a complete game together; offense, defense, and pitching."
In a marathon nightcap that went three hours and 35 minutes, Tara Grennan doubled in the first run to stake the Raiders to a 1-0 lead. Army tied the game 1-1 on Kristen McPeek's one-out single in the bottom of the third that knocked in Kasey McCravey, who drew a walk and stole second base.
Colgate snapped the tie on Marisa Dowling's two-out single up the middle in the top of the fifth to pull ahead 2-1, but Army starter Aja Brechtel stranded runners at first and second base on a strikeout looking.
Army retied the game in the bottom of the fifth when McCravey, who singled, stole second and was sacrificed to third, scored on an error by the third baseman to knot the score 2-all.
Kristen West (5-5), who took over the circle for Army in the sixth inning with one out and a runner at second, ended the threat with a double-play.
Colgate's Megan Carnase relieved starter Kira Griswold in the bottom of the sixth and threw five innings of shutout ball scattering four hits.
Army threatened in the seventh with one out on Alee Rashenskas' triple, but Carnsae escaped on back-go-back grounders, and just once over the next three frames allowed the Black Knights into scoring position. In the bottom of the ninth with one out, Gladys Esparza-Gallegos reached on an error, but back-to-grounders nipped that rally.
After Colgate snapped the 2-2 tie when Geranen drilled a one-out solo home run over the left field fence in the top of the 10th, Army challenged in the home half.
Xiomara Perez (2-for-5) led off with a hit but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. Following a strikeout for the second out, Alex Gaff ripped a single to left field, but Carnase closed the door with her fourth strikeout to level her mark to 2-2.
In the first game, Colgate scored all five runs over the first three innings. After plating a single run each in the first and second innings, the Raiders scored three runs in the third, keyed by Ieuter's two-run single, to pull away 5-0.
The Black Knights scored in the home half of the third inning on an error that allowed Esparza-Gallegos to score. With two outs, Esparza-Gallegos singled, moved to third on McPeek's (2-for-3) double and crossed on an error by the pitcher.
Ieuter, touched for two hits in that frame, did not allow Army into scoring position over the final four innings limiting the Black Knights to an infield hit in the fifth and walk in the sixth.
The Black Knights close out their three-game series hosting the Raiders Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m.
