Box Score
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Bucknell scored five unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning, Jacee Almond drove in four runs and Amanda Fazio threw hitless ball over 2.1 innings of relief as the Bison defeated Army West Point softball, 10-1, in Sunday's game to complete a three-game Patriot League sweep.
The Black Knights slipped to 19-22-1 and 8-7 in the Patriot League, and the Bison improved to 28-17 and 7-5 in conference play.
Trailing 5-0 after Bucknell scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth, the Black Knights rallied with a run with two outs in the home half behind a pair of doubles.
With one out, senior Alex Gaff doubled to left center field, then gave way to pinch runner Karena Gonzalez. Following the second out, Hailey Megge's double to left field drove in Gonzalez, in the process knocking out starter Dana Nielsen, who yielded two of her three hits in that inning over 4.2 innings of work.
Fazio nipped Army's threat on a groundout en route to retiring seven straight batters in earning her third save of the season, and second this weekend.
The Bison padded their lead with five runs, all unearned, in the top of the seventh after capitalizing on five hits and an error with Almond keying that outburst doubling home a pair.
Bucknell staked Nielsen to a 2-0 lead (just one run earned) in the top of the third on Almond's two-run homer to left field. A run in the fourth and two more in the fifth padded its lead to 5-0.
The Bison collected 12 hits off two Army pitchers with just two of the Bison runs earned. Starter Kristen West (6-8) was tagged with the loss with two of three runs off her earned with Caroline Smith pitching the final 3.1 innings with all seven runs unearned.
It was Senior Day at West Point for Gaff and Alyssa Strobehn, who were part of Army West Point's 2013 Patriot League Tournament Championship Team that earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament en route to posting 35 wins, second highest in school history.
The Black Knights host Albany in a non-league twinbill Tuesday before heading to Lehigh (April 25-26) to close out their Patriot League regular-season slate. Lehigh, the defending regular-season champions, are first in the league standings at 11-1.
Colgate and Holy Cross split today with the Raiders still second at 9-3 followed by the Black Knights (8-7), Bucknell (7-5) and Holy Cross (5-7). Defending champion Boston University (4-8) and Lafayette (1-14) round out the league standings
