Women's Rugby Takes Second at Brown Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Army women's rugby team dropped a 22-21 last-second heartbreaker to undefeated Norwich to take the runner up title at the Brown University Tournament on Saturday afternoon, posting a 3-3 record.
In the waning seconds of the extended 10-minute halves, Norwich posted the winning score, protecting its unblemished record and securing the first-place finish.
Army opened the tournament with a 28-7 victory over Harvard. The Crimson got things started, posting the opening seven points of the game, but the Black Knights' defense stepped up to the challenge, shutting Harvard down for the remainder of the game.
In the third minute of the second half, Allison McDonald scored for Army, with Nicole Heavirland adding the conversion, knotting the game at 7-7. Kate Roose followed in the sixth minute, with Heavirland adding her second kick of the game, to put Army up by a score of 14-7.
Heavirland would add a try and conversion in the sixth minute to give Army the 21-7 lead. Kirsten Redmon closed out the scoring in the seventh minute, as Heavirland connected on the kick to go a perfect four-for-four on the afternoon, and solidify the 28-7 win.
The Black Knights moved on to face conference rival Norwich in game two, dropping a 22-12 decision. The Cadets opened up the scoring in the third minute to take the 7-0 lead, but Roose would respond with back-to-back tries in the fourth and eighth minutes, sending Army into the break with the 12-7 advantage.
Norwich, however, came out strong in the second half, scoring three straight tries to earn the 22-12 win.
Army rebounded in game three, taking a 29-7 victory over host Brown.
Heaviralnd got things started with a try and successful conversion in the third minute and was followed by scores from Chioma Odocha and Chandler Cole, sending Army into the half with the 19-0 advantage.
Odocha posted her second of the game in the second minute of the second half, as Redmon closed out Army's scoring in the fourth minute. Brown got on the board in the seventh minute, but the Army lead proved too strong as the Black Knights held on for the 29-7 win.
The Black Knights dropped another close contest in game four, falling to Quinnipaic 12-5.
The Bobcats earned tries in the first and fifth minutes, taking a 12-0 lead into the half. Army scored the only points of second half in the opening minute of play, but Quinnipiac was able to hold on for the seven-point win.
Army, however, got its revenge in game five, earning a 51-0 blowout win over the Bobcats.
Allison Wilson put Army up early with a try in the third minute and was followed by back-to-back scores from Roose in the fifth and sixth minutes. Lindy Clark closed out the first half scoring in the seventh minute, earning Army a 20-0 lead.
Wilson started off the scoring again in the second half, posting a try less than a minute in. Heavirland succeeded on the conversion and followed it up with a try and conversion in the second minute, giving the Black Knights the 34-0 advantage.
Roose earned seventh try of the afternoon, and third of the game, in the third minute, as Heavirland booted the kick to put Army up 41-0. Heavirland and Carissa Pekny posted scores in the fifth and sixth minutes, respectively, giving the Black Knights the 51-0 victory.
Army advanced to the title game, playing against rival Norwich for the second time on the afternoon, this time in extended, 10-minute halves. Despite managing to hold their own with the undefeated Cadets, a last-second score proved to be the final factor for Army on the afternoon.
Wilson posted the first score of the game with Heavirland giving Army the early 7-0 lead. The Cadets would respond, earning two straight scores to close out the first half to take the 12-7 lead into the break.
Norwich continued its scoring touch in the second half, recording a try in the first minute to take a 17-7 lead. Roose and Heavirland eared back-to-back scores and conversions to take the 21-17 lead with a minute and a half to play.
The Cadets, however, would stun Army in the final minute, scoring as timed ticked off the clock to secure the 22-21 win and the title.
Army will next travel to the Virginia Beach Sevens Tournament on April 25 from Virginia Beach, Va.
