February 06, 2015 | Softball
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - - Kasey McCravey went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, and Army held on in the late innings behind the pitching of Caroline Smith and Aja Brechtel for a 9-7 win over UNC Greensboro in the Black Knights' season debut at the Charleston Challenge Friday morning.
Army (1-0) jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings with McCravey driving in a run and scoring herself in keying a five-run second-inning uprising.
With one out, Smith beat out an infield hit to start off the second inning. She moved to second when freshman Gladys Esparza-Gallegos drew a walk, then opened the scoring when she crossed on freshman Kristen McPeek's RBI single to right field. Freshman Hailey Megge drew a walk to load the bases and McCravey followed with a fielder's choice RBI delivering Esparza-Gallegos.
Megge and McCravey each moved up a base on a passed ball with Alee Rashenskas' RBI infield hit delivering Megge. Freshman Emily Gray roped a single to left field that scored McCravey with Rashenskas crossing on a fielding error to pull out to a 5-0 lead.
The Black Knights tacked on three more runs in the third inning to pull out to an early 8-0 advantage. McCravey and McPeek sparked the inning with a two-run double and RBI single, respectively. It was the second run drive in by McPeek, who was 2-for-2 and scored a run.
The Spartans cut Army's lead in half in the top of the fourth inning when Lindsay Thomas launched a three-run triple keying a four-run explosion to draw to 8-4. In the home half of that inning, Smith's RBI single back to the circle delivered Army's lone run for a 9-4 lead.
UNCG continued its rally with three runs in its next at-bat with Brechtel coming in to take over in relief of Smith with two outs and a runner at third and Army holding a 9-7 lead. After putting the first batter she faced on base, Brechtel got out of the inning on a strikeout looking.
Brechtel scattered two hits over the final 2.1 innings and did not let the two runners she left on base advance past first base in protecting Army's two-run lead. Army collected 12 hits with two each by McCravey, Smith, McPeek and Xiomara Perez. Three of the hits were doubles.
The Black Knights face Marshall in the second game today in the first meeting between the teams.
