WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point wrestling team will ring in the new year at the 2016 Defense Soap & Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle, hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in the McKenzie Arena on Friday, Jan. 1, and Saturday, Jan. 2.
"Our preparation for the Scuffle has been good," said head coach Kevin Ward. "Outside of the EIWA and NCAA tournaments, this is the toughest field we will face all season, so we know it will be a good challenge for us. Anytime we get a chance to compete in a tournament like this, it's exciting. We will have some good opportunities to get some good wins this weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing our guys compete."
For the first two days of 2016, 29 of the nation's best teams will be in competition at the Southern Scuffle, including 11 from the InterMat rankings. Three of the top five teams in the nations will be competing including No. 1 Penn State, No. 2 Oklahoma State and No. 4 Cornell. Additionally, No. 9 Michigan, No. 14 Lehigh, No. 15 Minnesota, No. 19 North Carolina, No. 22 Stanford, No. 23 Penn, No. 24 Duke and No. 25 Virginia are also in the field.
Seventy-eight of the wrestlers who are competing this weekend appear in the polls, with each weight class having no fewer than six ranked wrestlers. The 174, 184 and 197 pound classes each have a tournament-high nine ranked wrestlers. Seven of the ten top-ranked wrestlers in the nation will be competing. The Black Knights have two ranked wrestlers coming into the Southern Scuffle as Russell Parsons Jr. is ranked 14th at 157 pounds, and Brian Harvey is ranked 17th at 174 pounds.
The Black Knights have completed two of their four tournaments this season. They finished second at the New York State Championships on Nov. 22, behind Rocco Caywood's first top finish at 197 pounds, and a program-best 14th-place finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 4 and 5, led by Parsons Jr.'s fifth-place performance at 157 pounds.
The Southern Scuffle is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
