LAST TIME OUT
Army lost to No. 2 TCU on Sunday, November 22 by a score of 4697-4632.
The ninth-ranked Black Knights scored 2305 in smallbore and 2327 in air rifle while the Horned Frogs scored 2333 and 2364, respectively. TCU improved to 8-0 with the win.
"Last week, nobody was satisfied with their performance," said Army head coach Web Wright. "They're working harder. They are looking to overcome some of those difficulties."
Sophomore Josh Martin posted the Black Knights' fourth-best smallbore score of the season with a 583, good enough for a tie for third in the match. Martin posted perfect scores in both kneeling and standing, and scored a 99 and 100 in prone.
Senior Alyssa Gestl led Army in air rifle for the third straight match. Her 587 was fifth-best in the match as she scored 99 in four of the six stages. Gestl's 1163 aggregate score also placed her fifth in the match.
SIBLING RIVALRY
The Black Knights and Keydets will have a pair of brothers in attendance on Saturday. Army freshman Payne Nunn and VMI junior William Vaughan Nunn hail from Virgilina, Va., and each attended Hargrave Military Academy. The two have not competed much this season for their respective schools, but Payne recently shot an 1133 aggregate against TCU, the best score from either brother in their short careers.
Army also features two other siblings, as Alyssa Gestl's brother, sophomore Alex Gestl, is also on the team on the Black Knights.
LOOK AT VMI
The Keydets are 1-2 in their last three meets. After winning against USciences, they narrowly lost by seven points to North Georgia before losing to Morehead State by a score of 4594-4465 nearly a month ago.
Andrew Hickey has been the best shooter for the Keydets this season with a aggregate average of 1128.4 including taking top individual honors against North Georgia despite the loss.
"If we have a good showing, it will be a confidence booster," said Wright on the match with VMI. "It will be the last thing on their mind going into the break so I think that is beneficial when we start up after break."
NEXT UP: #8 Kentucky
Army will have over a month off before welcoming Kentucky on January 16. The currently eighth-ranked Wildcats are one of four ranked teams that the Black Knights open their spring schedule against which features the Star Match on February 6 with No. 14 Navy.
