WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point wrestling team is preparing for the New York State Championships which are hosted by Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y., on Sunday at 9 a.m.
The Black Knights are coming off a 1-2 showing at the Northeast Duals in Binghamton, N.Y., after earning the program's first shutout since a 41-point win over the Merchant Marine in 2006-07 with a 44-0 victory over LIU-Post.
"I think our preparation has been just what we needed this week," said head Kevin Ward. "We were able to learn a lot about ourselves, where we're at and what we are doing well at the Northeast Duals last weekend. We've had an opportunity this week to focus on the things that we need to improve on. Our hope is that, when we step out onto the mat this weekend, the guys are excited to show some progress.
"Anytime you go into a tournament where there is a team score taken, there's only one goal in mind: to be the best team in the gym. Right now, what we're focused on more than anything is being the toughest team in the gym. I think we're a solid team. We're talented and are further along technically than we were last year. What the coaching staff and the guys on the team want to see is us be the toughest team in the gym. If we do that, I feel like if we can do that we give ourselves a chance to win the tournament."
Army finished third out of 28 teams in last year's tournament and earned 128.5 points. Russell Parsons Jr. and last year's senior co-captain Chandler Smith each finished at the top of their weight classes at 157 and 165, respectively. Additionally, seniors Brian Harvey (174) and Austin Wilding (184) recorded a second-place finish at last year's competition.
