Volleyball Blanks Lafayette 3-0

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team beat Lafayette in three sets Friday night at Gillis Field House. The Black Knights swept the Leopards with set scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-18.
"I am very proud of the team's performance tonight," said head coach Alma Kovaci. "Our serve and pass game tonight was tremendous and I was proud of our ball control. Vanessa Edwards ran a really good offense. Jaden and Vanessa Wesley were incredible tonight which was a result of our good passing. That is something we have been working on in practice that we wanted to get stronger at and tonight it clicked. We were also really impressive on the block game. I was also proud of Nicole's performance tonight, she performed well for us on the serve and with her passing."
The Army West Point volleyball team improved to 12-6 overall and 4-1 in the Patriot League with tonight's win.
Jaden Pickell led the Black Knights with 19 points on 18 kills. Vanessa Wesley totaled 18 points off 15 kills and also tallied five blocks. Carolyn Bockrath added seven kills and six blocks, while Nicole Perri had four kills and four service aces.
Vanessa Edwards recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 34 assists and a team-high 18 digs. Shannel Chong tallied 14 digs and five assists to aid the Black Knights.
With Edwards' 34 assists tonight, she now totals 1,960 in her career and is only 40 assists away from reaching the 2,000 assists milestone for her career.
As a team, the Black Knights recorded 11.0 blocks, three solo and 16 block assists.
Lafayette jumped out to an early 5-3 lead, but the Black Knights fought back and an assist from Chong to Pickell tied the set at 10-all. Army pulled away to a 16-12 lead with points by Pickell and Bockrath. Wesley recorded a kill to push the score to 18-15 in favor of the Black Knights.
Perri was on the serve to lead Army to match point. Wesley tallied a kill before Perri recorded a service ace. Edwards assisted Pickell before an error by Army to make the score 24-17. The Black Knights won the set on a service error by the Leopards.
In set two, the Black Knights earned five-straight points to come out to a 6-3 lead. Army continued to excel early in the set and pushed forward to lead 12-5 before Lafayette was able to bring the score to 15-11. Kills by Pickell and Wesley, and an attacking error by the Leopards, put Army on a 3-0 run.
Once the Black Knights held a 19-13 lead, Lafayette wasn't able to fight back. Olivia Fairfield was on the serve for five points that pushed the set to match point. After a single point by the Leopards, Bockrath clinched the 25-14 score with a solo block.
Lafayette played tough in the third set, but Army was able to pull away to win. The Black Knights were leading 18-10 before the Leopards bounced back in an attempt to chip away at the Cadets' lead. With the score at 20-16, Army went on a 5-12 run to clinch the match 25-18.
The Black Knights will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. when they host service academy rival Navy at Gillis Field House.
The Midshipmen enter the Star Match with a 2-16 overall record and a 0-5 mark in the league after losing to Holy Cross Friday night in five sets. Olivia Kluger leads Navy offensively with 109 kills, while Dorothy Murray averages 2.29 kills per set.
Navy has played the highest percentage of league sets this season that have been determined by five or fewer points. The Mids have played 17 sets vs. league foes, with 11 of them (65%) being decided by no more than five points. Four of Navy's last eight matches have been decided in five sets.
Army leads 43-12 in the all-time series with Navy and is 25-5 at home against the Midshipmen.
