Volleyball Sweeps Lehigh at Home

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team beat Lehigh in straight sets Friday night at Gillis Field House. The Black Knights swept the Mountain Hawks by set scores of 25-14, 25-21 and 25-22.
"I am proud of the team for fighting through tonight," said head coach Alma Kovaci. "We had to make some adjustments and the team was able to remain calm under pressure and through the change. Lehigh is a very good team that is well coached and we knew we had to play our best against them. Our blocking game was very good and the team stayed calm under the adjustments we made."
Army improves to 14-6 on the season and boasts a 6-1 mark in conference play after tonight's win.
Vanessa Wesley led the Black Knights with 13 kills and a .455 hitting percentage. She tallied two solo blocks and one block assist to lead Army on the net defensively. Nicole Perri recorded eight kills, while Amber Clay tallied seven. Ellie Petersen recorded 17 digs in tonight's win.
The Black Knights came out to an 18-9 lead over the Mountain Hawks in the first set. Olivia Fairfield tallied a kill for Army before Lehigh scored three points. Perri tallied a kill to bring the score to 22-12.
After a point by the Mountain Hawks, Army earned a point off an attacking error before Bockrath recorded a solo block. Lehigh scored another point and had another error to close the match at 25-14 in favor of the Black Knights.
In set two, the Cadets were trailing Lehigh 19-18 before three-straight kills by Wesley gave Army a 21-19 lead. Lehigh was able to rally for a point before Wesley and Clay scored back-to-back points. The Black Knights won the set on a blocking point by Bockrath and Clay.
During set three, Army earned three points in a row to take 22-18 lead forcing a Lehigh timeout. The Mountain Hawks came back with two-straight kills before Vanessa Edwards assisted Fairfield. Clay tallied a kill before a Lehigh kill to bring the score to 24-22, but Bockrath earned a kill on the match point to clinch the match for Army.
The Black Knights return to Gillis Field House Oct. 17 for a match against Patriot League foe, Bucknell.
The Bison enters the weekend with a 9-8 overall record and a 3-4 mark in the league. Army leads 32-13 in the all-time series with Bucknell that began in 1988.
Karen Campbell falls just below Carolyn Bockrath and Wesley in the conference standings for hitting percentage with a .363 average. She ranks second in the league with 1.25 blocks per set.
