WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army women’s swim and dive team defeated Colgate, 161-127, and Lafayette, 194-89, Saturday afternoon at Crandall Pool. The Black Knights improve to 5-4 overall this season and 3-2 in Patriot League dual-meets.
“I thought today went really well,” stated head coach Mickey Wender. “The way we came out collectively was much better than we have been in terms of team presence and execution, which was much improved from a week ago. I thought everybody had a better sense of their race plan today and overall were more focused. I like where we are at, we have not backed off one iota in terms of focusing on the championship meet, which is our main focus.”
The highlight of the meet was arguably the very last event when the Army 200 free relay teams were split by class.
“The team loves to race and one thing about cadets is that they love to compete against each other,” said Wender. “Sometimes, when the meet is already decided, we get a little better effort out of the team when the class pride is on the line.”
The yearling team comprised of Danielle Nuszkowski, Kelly Hamilton, Megan Grier and Rachel Kim earned bragging rights after touching the wall in 1:39.25. They beat out the firsties who clocked a 1:41.37, the cows who recorded a 1:42.22 and the plebes who had a time of 1:46.03.
Sabrina Mortell placed first in the 1000 free and clocked a 10:20.83. In the 100 breast, Collin Kessinger claimed the top spot with a time of 1:07.36. Teresa Groton touched the wall in 2:12.25 in the 200 fly to finish first.
Kim finished first in the 100 free (52.19), while Bridget Ritter claimed the top spot in the 500 free (5:04.52) for the Black Knights.
Maggie Churchill swept both boards and tallied a 209.70 on the 1-meter and a 221.50 off the 3-meter. Delaney Musselman earned third in both categories with scores of 183.80 (1-meter) and 179.75 (3-meter).
The Black Knights are back home Saturday, Jan. 24 when they host George Mason, American and Boston U at Crandall Pool for senior day at 12 p.m.
