Volleyball Outlasts Campbell in Mizuno Invitational
September 06, 2014 | Volleyball
LONG BEACH, CALIF. – The Army volleyball team played its first five-set match of the season and came out victorious against Campbell in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The match concluded Army’s participation in the Long Beach State Mizuno Invitational after it lost the first two contests to Long Beach State and San Francisco.
The victory snaps a three-match slide for Army and improves its overall record to 3-5. Campbell drops to 3-4 on the year after also losing to both California squads.
After winning the fourth set to prolong the match, Campbell secured a 7-3 advantage in the decisive fifth set and forced an Army timeout after four consecutive points. Down by four, Army battled back to score five of the next six points and tie the score at 8-8. Campbell regained the lead on an Army miscue, but Carolyn Bockrath’s kill, a Campbell attack error and Nicole Perri’s point put Army ahead 11-9 and capped an 8-2 run as Campbell asked for time. The timeout helped, as the Fighting Camels tied the match at 13-13 before Army used a timeout. From there, Vanessa Edwards set up Olivia Fairfield twice to put the match away and secure the win.
The two sides were separated by a total of seven points in the first three sets, with Army claiming wins in sets two and three.
"The match was really close throughout," head coach Alma Kovaci said. "We grew a lot during that match and I am really proud of everyone. We passed and attacked better for most of tonight's match. It is always great to come back from a deficit in the fifth game and even better to see our team show mental toughness."
Four Army players reached double digits in kills, led by Perri’s season-high 20. Fairfield added 16, rookie Jaden Pickell had a season-high 12 and Bockrath had 10. Edwards’ double-double of 58 assists and 17 digs both marked season-best efforts. Freshman libero Shannel Chong contributed a team-high 18 digs and Deanna Dalton added 12 in the win for Army.
Campbell was led offensively by Jessica Groen’s 15 kills and Alexis Hein’s 14. Summer Schuitema posted a double-double with 44 assists and 14 digs and Mary Crema had 22 digs to lead the Fighting Camels.
Army closes it California swing on Sunday against UC Irvine. First serve from Irvine, Calif. is slated for 2 p.m. ET.
