San Francisco Drops Volleyball in Mizuno Invitational

LONG BEACH, CALIF. – Play continued for the Army volleyball team at the Long Beach State Mizuno Invitational on Saturday and the Black Knights dropped a 3-0 decision to San Francisco on Saturday afternoon at Walter Pyramid. Army fell in straight sets, losing 25-19, 25-14 and 25-17.
Individually, Amber Clay led Army’s offense with eight kills, Nicole Perri had seven and Carolyn Bockrath added six. Rookie Shannel Chong set a season-high with seven digs and junior co-captain Vanessa Edwards had 20 assists.
San Francisco had three players contribute 10 kills apiece, as Valentina Zaloznik, Katarina Pilepic and Anja Segota paced the balanced offensive effort. Kiara McKibben ran the offense and handed out a game-high 26 assists.
The Dons, who improved to 5-0 on the year, took control of the opening set with four straight points after the score was 14-13 in their favor. Army cut the deficit to 18-16 on a block by Olivia Fairfield, but it never got any closer in the set.
San Francisco took the second set on the strength of an early 11-3 run. The stretch helped the Dons build a 14-6 cushion and they scored the final five points to close the 25-14 victory.
Leading 2-0, San Francisco was up 10-9 following a kill by Clay. After that, the Dons scored eight of the next 10 points to distance itself from the Black Knights (18-11). Army scored five of the next seven to trim the deficit to four, but only scored once more as San Francisco came away with the 25-17 triumph.
Army dipped to 2-5 on the season with the result.
